hey, ive searched and researched but still cannot decide on the perfect exhaust system...I am thinking of getting a custom 2.25" piping with a dual tip magnaflow muffler...but I am not sure if i should use a resonator or not...considering i have a 91 camry i4, i do not want that farty sound i currently have with my 3.5 inch tip haha...when the car is on neutral it makes a nice reving sound but when i acutally drive the car it doesnt sound throaty at all...mayeb due to the low power that the 3sfe produce? so my main question is, what will the difference be in terms of the sound tone and throatyness with the resonator on or off? thank you
Get a good magnaflow muffler and a good magnaflow resonator and your car will sound good and not be too loud. I had that on my old camry (with a Pacesetter header) and it sounded pretty good.
Its not so much the size of the tip, but the quality of the muffler construction. Magnaflow makes really nice stuff.

continueing with this thread. Im looking for a magnaflow muffler and i cant find a resonator but I didnt look hard yet. anything I can do to further silence it? Im not much for a lot of noise at lower rpms. nice sound is good, but ricey sucks.
RedPhoenix, keep looking. Magnaflow makes resonators, oval mufflers, round mufflers and many other exhaust parts...
Illusive, Yes, a resonator will basically quiet the sound. If you get a nice long one, it will deepen the tone and remove raspiness. If you want quiet, make sure the muffler and resonator are as large as is reasonably possible. When I had mine done, I just told the guy what I wanted and he put on all the magnaflow parts... I didn't search on ebay or anything for the stuff.

i have an I4 with a 2" cat back sports exhaust, resonator and a muffler (nuffin flash), with 4" dump pipe chrome tip. My car doesnt fart at all, and sounds deep and throaty, loses a bit of its throatiness in high revs (above 5 grand but you shouldnt be takin ur engine up that high too often) but nuffin noticeable (unless you love the car). My exhaust shop said that having no resonator was a bad idea as these motors tend to be very loud with an exhaust, especially if its an automatic (which mine is). hope this helped.
auto/manual has nothing to do with it, and all engines are loud anyway...unless your turbo'ed then its quite quiet.

i was thinking of getting a magnaflow dual tip muffler with the smallest tip possible...but you said that the bigger the quieter...someon told me the bigger the tip, the fartier the sound on a n/a car...anyways, i thot a bigger tip would be louder than a smaller tip, i guess im wrong..lol sorry for being such an ignorant noob...im prolly annoying you guys...

The tip has almost nothing to do with the volume of the sound. I said get a big MUFFLER, not tip. I had a nice 3" double-walled tip on my old camry.

(my new one has a stock muffler hanging in the back for looks and a flat black painted side exit exhaust! )

I've got 2.5 in catback piping and a nice single tip magnaflow muffler on my 89 Gen2. I don't have a resonator and the system is honestly quieter than stock in many situations. It has a nice smooth throaty exhaust note without a hint of fartiness. I got the system built for me at a local muffler shop and they did quite a nice job.
does it matter how far the resonator is located in the exhaust system from the cat? what would be the best place place to have the resonator? closer to the cat...in the middle...? hey white90dx, how do you pass smog with the turbo in your 3sfe...lol
