i have a few questions regarding some DIY stuff i want to/in the middle of doing:
took out the dash and took off the green condoms from the lighting. left it just light that and realized how fugly it was so i plan on doing it ghetto style and coloring them in with a permanent marker.. has anyone done this before?
want to change my light bulbs in my head lights. OEM ones just dont cut it when its pure dark out. i know everyone recommends silverstars so i want to get those. what are the correct size i need to get? 9005(low) and 9006(high)? is it just a drop it kinda thing?
plan to change my fuel filter. i know it is located under the airbox. for most that would be a bitchin problem but my airbox is already out in my ghetto style CAI. it actually gives a very nice sound and there is no loss(small gain) in low end tq. can someone give me advice on changing the fuel filter? is it difficult?
i want to do something with my grill. i was thinking cutting out the middle part with the bar running horizontally and the emblem so that it is empty in the middle, then put some mesh in its place. not sure how it would look, has anyone done this on a gen 3? i dont want to do it and then realize it looks like crap.
thats all for now, please respond quick so i can do this stuff tmrw morning
well, using a permanent marker won't be good since those guys are super thick and once you colour it, light won't go through well. your best bet for that is to use die-cast model paint. you can get transparent paint which works great. it's very thin and lets light through easily. Testors is a really good brand for those.
in regards to your grill: you can do what RedPhoenix did and what i also did after i found out that he did it . basically, you take off your grill, you go to home depot and you buy a role of aluminum gutter guards. come home and cut out a piece of the guards to fit the grille. using a silicon compound glue, you can easily attach it to the backside of your grille. you can also go the ghetto way and do what i did. i used nylon tier rods. since my car is white like the rods, its fine and doesn't affect me at all, haha. but yea, try doing that. it's pretty simple. just be careful cutting the gutter guards, that little thing is friggin' sharp!
in reference to the grill, you left it stock but just put the gutter gard behind it? i was thinking clearing that whole part out, uncluding the emblem. do u think that would look good?
i dunno how that would look. i left my grill entirely stock, kept the emblem and everything. if you want to cut out the center piece, it'd be better if you got a back-up just in case. the plastic in the grille seems very fragile so i'd be scared to cut it apart. it would look unique if done correctly though
btw, mine is a gen 3.5
I cut out all the bars and filled the resulting holes by exopying sheet metal to the back and laying Bondo-Hair filler in the holes. The black metal is 1/2in expanded metal. I think it looks alot better than the gutter guard. I got a 4x4ft sheet of it for $25 at my local steel warehouse.
i took the condoms off mine and it was too bright. I sprayed the bulbs (not the plastic or metal connectors, just the glass bulb) with regular automotive paint, metallic blue. Looks ok, blue condoms are in the future plans tho....
grayguy: did u have to put an extra piece on the top part of your grill? for some reason i dont remember that being there.. or maybe i am mistaken. looks great tho! thats the look i was looking for. maybe i will try that one day.
in reference to the lights, what type of replacement bulbs do i need? would i be able to get them at a local autozone?
anyone have an idea about this stuff?:

I just had my fuel filter replaced along with a bunch of other tune-up parts recently.
The guy that did it for me (a co-worker who's a mechanic where I work) had also been told that it's be a bitch to change. It's not that it's a difficult job as much as it's in a bad location. To replace it we had to temporary remove my short ram intake for better access to it. It's just 2 bolts if I remember correctly. Just a tedious job unbolting them. Was like a good 3-4 mins of unbolting.

Its the other way around. 9005 (high), 9006 (low).
You can modify a 9005 and use it for your low beams. Its 65W vs. 55W and the tip of the bulb is not coated like a 9006.
can someone give me advice on changing the fuel filter? is it difficult?
1. Leave the filter on the car till you remove the upper and lower hoses. Remove the filter last.
2. Use a breaker bar to loosen up the bolt going into the top of the filter.
3. Use a flare nut wrench (if you have them) on the fitting going into the bottom of the filter. If you don't have flare nut wrenches a normal open end wrench will work, just becareful not to round off the fitting.
You can also use another wrench to hold the filter. If you look at the bottom of the filter you'll see a hex shaped portion that you put a wrench around.
4. Replace the 2 copper washers/gaskets on the top bolt. Toyota dealerships sell it for a few bucks and I believe it comes as one piece (both washers/gaskets tied together with a small piece in the middle).
The washers/gaskets might be included with the fuel filter. If not buy the washers/gaskets seperately.
