*UPDATE* Problem with a shifter

I cannot put the shifter in R or D from park even after I press the brake I always have to use pen and push the thing by the shifter. Anyone knows what could be cause of this. It started today 1993 Toyota Camry XLE V6. Thank you guys.

Do yourself a favor and buy a haynes manual. It tells you a lot about your car, including how the park disengage system works and how you'd go about fixing/replacing things. It costs about $17 at AutoZone or similar store. I'd try to type some of it out, but it's a lot to type and also mine is 6 years newer, so it might be different.

I had the same problem with another car. It turns out that there is an electric switch that contacts the brake pedal, similar to the brake light switch. When the ignition is on and the brake pedal is depressed, the shifter should come out of park, but the switch went bad, and the shifter would not budge. This was on a Ford Taurus, but the principle is probably the same.

I jsut went through this same thing with my brother-in-laws 94 XLE V6. You need to get the stop light switch. only place to get it probably is OE Toyota. Check around online for it. Takes less than half an hour to replace it. You may want to check fuses first jsut to make sure but 99.9% sure you need the switch. SHould be able to do it your self.

Can you please just briefly explain where is the switch located. Is it the switch right next to brake pedal underneath it has like a blue plastic cover on one side and it is connected with four wires is that stop switch??? thank you. And if you remember how much did the switch cost at the dealer?

I do not have my camry here right now so I cant look at it to verify but I think there is only one switch that is anywhere near the brake pedal. I am not sure of the switch cost because it was not mine to replace. Like I said it was my brother in laws car. He had the car towed for something else and the switch replaced and it cost him $150.00. jsut call the dealer and ask how mucha stop light switch is for your car or do a search online for it. I bet you can find one online for lots less than at the dealer.
