2nd Generation CAI Installation Help

Hey...first of all, before you say anything, I tried the search function for CAI Installation Help.

I have a 1990 Camry V6 and am currently looking at a CAI to boost my HP and torque.

Question is...since many manufacturers do NOT carry CAIs for such old models, I was forced to look elsewhere. And I found the perfect match on EBay Motors. Yes, I know, EBay...but no-one had 1990 Camry CAIs.

However, I think the kit does not include the directions, just the hardware. Can anyone give me step by step instructions into installing the CAI for my Camry? That would be appreciated a lot.

My Specs:

1990 Toyota Camry DX V6 2WD
Engine: 2VZFE
Chassis:
VZV21

Intake kit includes:

  • 1 Polished air intake tube

  • 1 Air Filter

  • 4 Clamps
  • 2 Couplers
That is what it said...no instructions.. And some picture of what it looks like installed.

2nd Generation

Well...that doesn't help much...My knowledge in cars are minimal.

Just unhook the end of the intake system..put the filter on
And then unhook the tube, put the new one on

Step by step instructions would be extremely helpful.

basically, remove all the stock piping, airbox, filter, etc.

then use the couplings/clamps to attach your new piping to your AFM, then attach your new filter to your afm with the couplings/clamps

then reattach the pvc return hose from your new piping to the vacuum hose that it's on....at least I think it's a vacuum hose...or whatever

So....do I have to unclip the original air filter?

And it seems that the CAI would be much larger...and couldnt fit in that space...do I need to remove the battery?

you only need

- intake adapter
- air filter

everything comes out with a 10mm socket/wrench (even the clamps if you dont use a phillips head driver)

if you CANNOT do this on your own by looking at the pictures, get someone else to do it -- 5 minutes at most.

dude, if you cant figure this out, you really need to reconsider if you really want to mod your car.

The only thing you need to watch out for is the connector on the AFM. it has a wire clip on the connector that you need to pry off with like a small flat head screw driver. Everything else is straight forward. the hoses are held on with clamps that you tighten and loosen with a philips head screw driver.

well...I think the thing that may be confusing here is that (from the picture) it's not a cai, but a short ram, and we're presuming that it's a full cai...

if it's just a short ram, you can keep the stock intake piping in hte bumper and fender, and just remobve the air box and the piping going to the afm and intake manifold

That's what I thought too....didn't seem to be a full CAI, besides it couldn't have been...not enough parts.

So...it is a short RAM...damn false advertising. And, er....what's an AFM?

But does a short RAM increase HP or torque? It's just replacing the stock pipe and changing the original air filter box with a cone filter...

power? nope. efficiency? nope. loud sounds when at WOT? yes. looks nice? yes- usually.

and your AFM is that big blockly thing right before the cone filter in your picture.
it measures the amount of air entering your intake

Ohhh...so that's called an AFM.

Damnit, so it's not a wise investment then? The price was $50, including shipping. I did not buy it yet.

So....this is what taking out the factory air intake shoud look like?

WOT = wide open throttle ?

Waiit....if I get a new MAF filter as well as the short ram, would it do any difference? And...is there a way to replace the AFM to give the engine more air...thus running faster? Does the MAF fit inside? The pictures I saw, it was shaped like a little round filter.

Mass air sensor...should I replace it? But the kit didn't come with it....

Your all confused.

AFM = air flow meter.

MAF = mass air flow.

Their 2 different things, you can't replace one with the other.

All you need for your car is a AFM adapter and cone filter.

*scratches head REALLY hard*

I don't think you're really understanding this....but to answer your question, yes, technically, that is removing your stock airbox....but htat's not your car...yours should be a lot smaller and part of it is hidden inside your fender/front bumper

and to get things straight, you dont' have a MAF (masss air flow) sensor, but an AFM (I htink it's just air flow meter), but they do the same things for your ecu

and you don't replace it when you get a new intake...you keep your stock one and use it. you just use different piping

and no...it's not an investment to get a short ram
it's for looks and for sound, and that's about it. but it's a start, and you CAN turn it into a true cai (which uses piping to extend into the front bumper) later on and get actual performance results, albeit small ones

and just giving more air doesn't mean more power, unless you have too much air in the first place. seriously tho- it doesn't seem you know enough about this to start messing around with your a/f ratios tho

if this STILL confuses you, I'd suggest even more research until you buy that intake.
