Gen5 attn:ppl w/ Eibach/TRD springs

Hey guys.

I installed TRD springs on my gen5 a month ago.

Now when I turn the steering wheel, it makes a clunking sound. Are you guys getting this too?

Another thing is that when I looked at the springs today, i noticed that the last two coils from the front are touching each. I mean... they're literally resting on each other. Maybe thats where the sound is coming from, the coils are rubbing maybe? I've never seen that before. Is that normal and are your springs like that too?

Any help would be appreciated.

I ordered mine maybe over a year ago and I tried to install them. I started to notice exactly what you are mentioning plus a clunking noise when going over some bumps. I talked to the dealer I got it from and he thought that my predicament was strange too. He then called TRD USA and found out that he gave me springs for the Solara, and Solara's springs are smaller than the Camry. That really confused me because I heard the Solara was heavier. He got me the correct ones for the 2002 Camry and we compared the springs. The new ones he gave me were wider in diameter and a little higher.

I haven't installed the new ones yet, so I'm not sure if it fits. Heck, I'm trying to figure out how to get my check engine light to turn off after my intake install.

Wait a minute. So if I get the TRD springs they will blow out my struts? I thought that the TRD springs wouldn't do that since they are backed by Toyota and wont void your warranty. Can someone clarify this?

Did you notice the springs have the rubber isolators on the coil? Where did you go to install the springs?

It's normal for the last 2 coils to stack (aka "dead coils") in progressive springs. Some brand so and some don't, I guess it's just designed to create more comfort.

Super Kaioken:
You should always install aftermarket springs with new struts. The only reason people don't do it is to save cost for the short run. With aftermarket springs, your stock struts will prematurely wear out and you'll have to replace them anyway. It's been discussed more than a dozen times here.

So does this apply to the TRD springs too? If I install them would I need some new struts.

OEM struts are fine for now with such a small drop as the TRD/Eibach and Tein springs. Eventually though you'll need to upgrade to aftermarket struts because of the premature wear that occurs.

When you upgrade struts make sure you get good ones to improve dampening power. I was going to get better ones but I think I'm just going to drop a bit more and get full coilovers eventually.. OEM struts will hold out till then.
