3rd Generation a/c issue

Ok guys. i just tried my AC today. and it doesn't work. I bought my car last year and it was blasting cold. But i hardly used it last summer. Today i wanted to try it out since the weather was pretty hot.

The a/c isn't working. I feel the compressor turn on when i push the AC button aleast. I also hear a hissing sound from my vents leading me to believe i have a leak. I assume its the evap. Which i really hope it isn't because removing my dash is something i dont want to do. I'm hoping its a AC line or something.

What are other methods of testing this. Should i just evauate and recharge the system first and see if that works.

Cool

Go buy a cheap ass recharge kit from an auto store.
You put the gauge on the low pressure A/C line. It tells you the psi, and if low, how many recharge cans you should add to refill it.

I think he's got a leak! When its not recharged..its still cold, but you not as cold as before...with this dude..the a/c wasn't blasting cold air at all...its most prob a leak! The dye and the UV light would be perfect.
Question: how do you guys know how many cans to use?

well yea first thoughts are to recharge the system but i dont really think thats the case right now.

I mean my freon is like gone!! last year it was ice cold when i bought it and this year its not even remotely cold and on top of that, the hissing sound really scares me a lot. I guess my best bet right now is to just put some of that UV dye in it and see what happens.

dont all R134a come with the speical dye already mixed?

About the hissing, If its a low hissing noise coming from the vents I believe its completly normal. My Cold A/C does this when the compressor kicks in and out.

if the a/c has no freon the compressor will not turn on. the electromagnetic clutch shouldnt kick in, thus no turn of the compressor. at least thats what happens on my porsche, and i think i saw it on my camry before i did a recharge. if you are completely out of freon, then two cans will do it. try and run some oil through the lines before you do it, and make sure which type of freon you use before putting in any ol' stuff. dont mix the freons around!
