I've noticed that my car runs fine without the A/C on. When I ride with the A/C on for longer than 30mins I notice the temp gauge to starting rising. The highest it's gone is 75%. Not cool. The air blows cold and the heat blows hot. If i put the car in neutral and rev then the temp goes down. If I start driving the temp goes down. With the A/C off the car runs at normal temperature. Once it gets really hot and I rev the engine, the more I push down the pedal, the faster and louder the fans go. Is this normal? I am running 70% coolant 30% water. I bought a thermostat but it's a bitch to install. Could this be it?
Please help!!!
Oh BTW: I forgot to mention that there is a clicking noise that seems like it's coming from under the dash. It clicks slowly but the faster I drive the faster it clicks. This may have nothing to do with it but I figured I would share it. It could simply be a relay on my alarm or something.

First you should be running a 50/50 mixture. I would do that first. Do you have an electronic fan? If so, it should kick on when you turn on the AC. Sounds like it's AC related if that is the only time it overheats. You should check to make sure that your electronic fan kicks on when you turn on your ac first.
I would think that the coolant/water mixture is pretty important too....I'd do the 50/50 if not 60water/40 coolant....as long as there's no danger of freezing, the more water the better

Symptoms sound similar to my truck when i had it....turn out to be the thermostat. It might be a bitch to get at..but i'm sure iti'll be easier then the thought of a blown gasket?=0)
----umm...with my truck, apparently, i didn't figure it out soon enough because ...well, i had a cracked head... when i took it in i believe.
And if it's not the thermo..it cost you only a new bucket of coolant, water, and elbow grease to find out.=0)

^^^^^ agrees with the thermostat first. I cant rememebr but is the fan electric or is it like the 1MZ that is run off of the power steering. If so maybe it is not working correctly. Nevermessed with those when I was doing it so not sure how to actually check it out. seemed to never have any problems with them.

i can safely say all camrys in the US have electric fans.

Not to be a smartass but, I can safely say that you are wrong about that because the cooling fan for a Gen3 1MZ is run by the power steering pump. open one up and you will see the lines running to it. The terminology used by Toyota is Electronically Controlled Hydraulic Cooling Fan System. The power steering pump runs a hydraulic motor. There is a solenoid that opens and closes depending on engine temp and A/C on or off to allow a hydraulic motor to operate which in turn is hooked to the fan.

Dude!..that's crazy, i learned something new...damn...hot dog. I don't have that engine, but i do have page 3-6 of the haynes book and diagram 5.1.
And according to his domain site pics...ie the rear car shot shows a V6 and it's a 93. So the car does have this sort of fan you are talking about....
might want to check the fan out after the thermostat if it's not working correctly after doing the thermostat.

no problem. When I first started working at Toyota and saw that I was like WTF is all this. but they are pretty cool the way they work because it is a variable speed fan. the more the solenoid opens up the more fluid the more speed.

The more water the better? WRONG! Coolant lowers the boiling point of water.
Wow... Now we're getting into major misinformation.

Like they told you.
All 3vz-fe's have a hydraulic fans. Why is that important? Because in other markets, the 3vz-fe was used partly into the first year of a gen4! (97.5)
But all gen 3 v6's use a hydraulic system AFAIK.

........
Coolant LOWERS the freezing point of water, and RAISES the boiling point.
The coolants themselves only have 60% of the specific heat capacity that striaght water does. The higher the ratio of water you run, the better the cooling is.
I've always used (Alabama... Warm climate) 75% water, 25% A/F, plus the recommended amount of Redline Water Wetter. Maximum cooling, while the inhibitor package remains MORE effective than a 50-50 mix.

Maybe that's correct for something like a new UZ-FE v8, but that's not correct on the old v6's. It's a two speed hydrauic clutch. High & low. Nothing else.
