Squeaky after Timing Belt...

A while ago (since last Aug) my CEL came on and it showed a code P0402 (EGR Flow Excessive). So just 2 weeks ago I finally had the chance to follow up on this code and while at it replace my timing belt. The shop replaced the EGR Vaccum Modulator as they said Toyota told them this is the most common problem with GEN3 whenever this code shows up. So they replaced it. Just few days ago, the CEL came back on.

Now to the timing belt. After they had replace the timing belt. I noticed there's this whining noise when I press the go-pedal. Now just yesterday I noticed outside the car idles alot noiser and seems rougher (the rpm jumps a little to almost 1k then drops back to 800rpm), and appears to be this squeaky noise. Very noticable even in the car. I open up the hood and gave the throttle cable a few pull to rev up the engine, and it almost sounds like the engine is struggling a little.

Anyhow, I called the shop and asked me to bring it in for them to scan the code. Same code. They had ask me to make an appointment and bring it in next week.

Note that I do have CAI installed, and I have read that if there's air leaking between the MAF and TB it will cause the idle rpm to jump little. I might have to double check on the connection on the CAI. I remembered taht when I installed the CAI, the rubber connector between the pipe going to the TB and the MAF seems to have a little gap between them. Is this how its suppose to be??

Now I want to ask my fellow TN members here, what are the other possibilty for this CEL to reappear even after the EGR Vaccum Modulator was replaced and the current situation of the timing belt.

Thanks guys!!

with the CAI, make sure the rubber connectors that came with the intake are on as tight as u can get 'em with both pipes/TB/MAF as far in as u can. and as long as u followed the directions and did everything correctly for install, there shouldn't be and leaking...

as for the timing belt, im not quite sure but when my neighbor replaced his (in a 94 teg.) it made a high pitched squeal/whine on start-up and he said it was b/c the belt was new and needed breaking in (and it stopped whining a while later)...i would suggest searching for this one...

my timing belt also whining as rpm goes up right after it was replaced, and the mechanic said probably the belt was too tight or something, but can leave it alone, now, after 50k miles, the noise seem has gone away, probably the belt stretched a bit.

Timing belts are usually a bit noisey for the first couple of thousand miles, nothing to worry about, it will go away.

its a really good idea, like the water pump, just replace it while you are there.
