Lately, out of the blue, I've started hearing a faint (but sometimes loud) humming/whirring noise whenever I accelerate from full stop. This is a faint/low frequency humming sound buried in the background. The sound is usually there during low speeds (perhaps b/c it's easier to hear it) and you can notice it quite well when I accelerate slowly from a full stop. The sound is not continuous, it will appear for 1-2 seconds and then die down. I went to Toyota and the tech there tells me that it's probably the engine belt that needs replacing, but I'm not quite sure, as I just had the thing de-glazed a couple of weeks ago, and perhaps it's b/c they didn't set it back properly. Nonetheless, I'm wondering if it could be something else. God knows I've tried reproducing the sound to the tech, but he seems unable to hear it even though that I could; I've also tried recording the sound, and I actually got it on tape (quite clearly, in fact), but the tech seems unable to get past the turn-siginal sound...lol
Smash into any curbs latley? Whats your alighnment like? Awhile back i hit a curb really fast, about 20 mph. And i broke my wheel bearings and front CV joints. I had the same sound and my alignment was trashed. cost about $500 to fix.

Well I've ran over a few curbs during slow turns, but nothing even close to what one would call "crashing" into the curbs...
i have the same issue, u can hear a faint whine while at idle. Once u get on the gas the whining increases. And I can hear some kind of squeaking outside of the car, and faintly inside the car. This is all happening after I got my timing belt changed last week!!!

It's kinda hard to decipher whether it's a normal sound...A sound clip would work....My car makes a hissing or whinding noise when accelerating....But all G5's do that..

Well, first of all, it's definately there during idle as well - so wheel bearings aren't the problem.
Also, I tried stepping on the gas when in N, and the same sound is still there, so it isn't the transmission.
Lastly, when I popped the hood to check, I can tell that the sound is definately coming from the general area of the engine belt, and it's a faint whirring/humming that is ALWAYS there, but just gets slightly louder for 1-2 seconds when someone steps on the gas, so this leads me to think that it's most definately something to do with the belt (continuous sound, getting louder during acceleration)...
Maybe I'll get the belt changed - think it's still under warranty after 3 years (2002 Camry) and 5,5000 Km?
If it isn't under warranty anymore, think it's possible for Toyota to take off the belt but then restart the engine and let me hear if the sound is still there?

lol, I seem to be the only one with this specific problem...
If its not under warranty, it'll probably be cheaper for you to have a mechanic do it for you... the timing belt isn't that complicated of a part, but toyota will rape you on labor.

Glaring blue HID bulbs are NOT classy, and don't make your car look nice, no matter what that kid in the Civic told you.
I have the same Problem as well, the sound is like a rattling sound and it is really low when the car is idle but when i accelerate i could hear the rattle get louder. I have read that there is a minor recall that could be found on alldata.com, I got this information from the May Issue of Popular mechanics and they said its the intake manifold

I can't seem to find the link on Alldata.com - mind showing me where that is? Also, I'm not sure if I'd call the sound a rattling sound, for it's more of a humming/whirring sound, but other than that, the situation under which the sound occurs is exactly the same.
