5S-GTE thread repost...

Ok, certain years of 5S-FE ( early 3rd Gens ) can use the 3S-GTE head ( basically, like a hyrbid motor). With minor or no modification, need to fit the head onto the 5S-FE short block. Ok, I'll let the cat out of the bag... here's the how to do hybrid motor from your friendly neighborhood Wraith:

°Drill and tap oil filter side of block to accommodate turbo oil feed. Drill and tap the stock 5S-FE oil pan for turbo oil return line. Or use the 3S-GTE oil pan ...

°Ported oil channels for better and less restrictive oil flow. (not really necessary but good for reliability)

°Port and polished 3S-GTE oil pump.

°3S-GTE water pump port out and polish ( if needed).

°All new bearings including thrust bearing, (clearance at 0.002).

°Balanced crank and crank assembly (3s-gte or 5s-fe depending on what displacement your looking for).

°Forged Pauter I-beam connecting rods, for 3s-gte.

°87.5 mm Forged pistons

° .95mm Head Gasket or Deck block to smooth finish for steel gasket setup. And you can run any thickness you want.

°Custom flywheel ( if you use a 5s-fe Crank or just open up the holes on a 3s-gte flywheel) or if you use a 3s-gte crank you can use a 3s-gte flywheel.

°Thrust Bearing ( 5s-fe or 3s-gte depending with tranny your running).

°New engine gaskets and seals.

°Fitting for 3S-GTE dip stick.

°Oil fittings and braided lines.

°Modified 5SFE fuel rail to fit 3S-GTE head with bosch injector setup.

°Boost dependant fuel regulator not need if you get the 3S-GTE fuel regulator.

°3S-GTE cambelt.

°3S-GTE cambelt tensioner.

°3S-GTE idler pulleys.

°3S-GTE head bolt or ARp head studs.

I think thats it off the top of my head. But, I'll add more later if I remember anything extra... Hope this helps...

Addition to the above information: 8/25/02 7:01pm

° 3S-GTE ecu

° 3S-GTE igniters

° 3S-GTE harness needs to be mated to the 5S-FE harness

° 3S-GTE map sensor

° 3S-GTE MAF sensor

° 3S-GTE cap , rotor, wires

° 3S-GTE or better fuel pump

° 3S-GTE 440cc injectors

Addition to the above information: 8/29/02 9:21pm

°If you dont plan on machining the block for the oil squiters. I suggest riffle drilling the 5S-FE or 3S-GTE rods for better oiling and to grantee that the oil gets to the wrist pins...

Theres a 7 sets of 5S-FE rods on the shelves on www.Pauter.com

I will be doing a full write up ( which will include photos, I hope ) on the Hybrid swap minus the wiring harness ... And I will only be posting my progress here and maybe later on the MR2 baord... So keep posted!!!

heres are my emails and reples to Ray at Burien toyota:

me-"Is there a cheap way to turn a '98 5s-fe into a 5s-ge? Ive heard that earlier model 5s models could be fitted with the head package from 3s-ge engines will relative ease, but will the same apply to my 98 5sfe? Appreciate any help!! "

ray-"I've heard that rumor too, and we're in the process of getting a used 3SGTE head and trying it on a 5SFE block. Check back with us in about a month. "

me-"Really?! well thats good. I think that a 5s-gte project would be fun. What year 5s block are you using and what year gte head are you using?"

ray-"The 5SFE block is a 1992, but they are all the same. The 3SGTE head, I'm not sure about until it arrives from the wrecking yard."

Wraith...i know that you are a very credible man, but ray says "they're all the same". Im definately not saying your wrong....hes right, but now that i got two different answers, i feel i should push the issue further. I might just bear down and write to toyota and ask some questions.

Back to the post, thanks for all that info. If i do take that route...ill use that list as a rudimentary guide. Appreciate your time.

I'll stand my ground that the new 5S-FE doesnt have the same water jackets as the older models. And there is a possiblity that you cannot bolt the 3S-GTE tranny onto the newer 5S-FE ... But, I am dead sure that the newer 5S-FE has smaller water jackets than the old 5S-FE and 3S-GTE...

hey Humpty;
I'm sorry I couldnt/wouldnt give up the information alot earlier during the year. But, I still had to find / research alot of things about the Hybrid motor. I will be doing a full write up ( which will include photos, I hope ) on the Hybrid swap minus the wiring harness ... And I will only be posting my progress here and maybe later on the MR2 baord... So keep posted...

As for your NOX problem. I suggest getting an extra catalytic converter from Random Technology. The reason why I suggest Random Technology because 1# they're smog legal , 2# they use a higher amount of Platinum in their converters.... Another way is make sure the engine is running in tip top condition before smog(i.e. plugs, wires, cap, and rotor)... Good Luck on your project...

yes his name is ChrisK very knowledgable guy just there are a few things that his list is missing... His list on the other hand mostly is compiled of aftermarket parts wish list. Theres no mention of the wirst pin height or the exact width of the piston. Which I hope to provide when I get mines in from JE pistons...

I'm sooo hyped right now... I have to finish the Wraith then its on to the '72 Celica... I'm planning on dropping a BEAMS 3S-GE with dual VVT-I with 4 individual throttle bodies, 6 speed trans and 2way limited slip differetial onto my Celica.

But, after the Wraith project I will be trying to contact the magazines... Then go do some racing... I just hope my wallet can keep up...hehehehe
