3rd Generation A/C nonsense!

ok ive searched all relavent a/c posts, looked through my mitchell on demand and the damn repair manual here and i still cant find out whats wrong with this crazy ass a/c system.

problem is no cold air...obviously. its a 92 (r-12) 4 cyl, with the 3 dial type switches.

when i push the ac button, the light doesnt go on, the idle doesnt change and the clutch doesnt engage. so i started by checking the fuses and then checking the clutch relay which functions properly. then i applied power to the clutch directly and it engages. now the funny business begins, i took out the button for the a/c to see if it was defective, which it isnt. but when i apply ground to pin 5 the car idles up, but the compressor clutch doesnt engage. i really didnt want to rip out the whole dash to get to the rest of the components before i could see if anyone could point me in the right direction. am i missing another relay or fuse located in some silly spot?
