Crankshaft pulley trouble... BIG BIG TROUBLE!! and little bit of reading...

Okay about 2 weeks ago I took my car to a shop for a timing belt change. Everything went smooth except that the bolt for the No 1 Timing Belt cover wont' come off, so they used heat to try to get the cover off... end up melting the cover, but thats alright they replaced it. They replaced the timing belt after that, and I had to take the car back the next day so they can put a new No 1 Timing Belt cover on.

So picked up the car after they had replaced the No 1 TB cover, and took it for a drive. Everything seems smooth... until few days after. I noticed a whining notice inside and outside the car, and after the car is warmed up you would hear this squealing noise. So I proceed to taking the car back to the shop today.

I left them the car for the day, and went back to pick it up later in the day. I didnt' receive a phone call from them, assuming everything is all taken care off. HOWEVER...

Went I got there, they told me there's trouble. (FUCK!!) Went back to see the car... the first thing I see is the crankshaft pulley had grind part of the edge of the oil pan off showing shiny metal. This can't be good I was thinking.

2 Pictures I got from the Haynes manual (NOTICE THE RED MARKINGS)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...haftpulley.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...tandoilpan.jpg

This is what the shop told me. It seems like the crankshaft pulley is installed too close to the oil pan causing the grinding of the oil pan. And the cause of the the crankshaft pulley being too close is because the crankshaft somehow itself is pushed IN (towards the engine, not the brakes/wheel direction), thats why causing the all those noises because the crankshaft pulley is misaligned with the other pulleys.

Right now, the shop is fabricating a spacer so it allows the pulley to be spaced out from the oil pan, and hopefully that will solve the problem.

But these are my questions

1) How the hell would the crankshaft suddenly shift INWARDS?

2) Is there a washer/spacer missing between the pulley and the crankshaft sprocket/oil pan?

3) If there isn't washer/spacer between there, would it have anything to do with the TB Guide? But the TB Guide isn't wide enough to compensate for the gap between the pulley and the crankshaft sprocket/oil pan.

TB and related components

4) Just last summer, I had my transmission replaced. Would it have anything to do when my transmission was replaced?

Man, I didn't expect anything like this!! I was just hoping for them telling me that the belt was on too tight thats all... but this is fucked up!!

I really really really appreciate any help...

THANK YOU

Sounds like BS to me.

There's a large washer (timing belt guide) between the crank timing belt gear and the crank pulley. This large washer is flared out away from the belt and acts to guide the belt to stay in place (so the edges of the belt won't wear).

Seems to me if the washer was left off, the crank pulley would have been closer to the pan.

What you think?

Maybe they did the damage trying to pry things off?

Cool

What in the fuck...
They don't fab a spacer. They buy you a new god damned pulley and oil pan. Then you have it installed correctly. It's not isntalled too close to the oil pan. They installed it incorrectly...

What 500KCamry said about the little guide.

Don't let them jerk you around... They fucked your engine up, they need to replace the parts at their cost.

The crankshaft can't move inwards like being suggested.

I think the damage occured from them prying, or leaving the TB guide off.

They should fess up.

so the only possibly reason why it was grinding against the oil pan was because the TB guide was left out?

going there to pick up the car later on today, they better gimme some good news

Either that or the crank pulley is not installed correctly.

They could of fucked up the crank pulley when they removed/installed it.

The crank won't just magically shift positions. Its not a Mitsubishi engine with crank walk issues.

You are getting screwed by these guys. It has been a while since I worked in service at the Toyota Dealer but when I was there I was doing at least one timing belt a day and most of the time 2 or 3. In the almost 4 years I was there I never had anything like what you are talkinga bout happen. It sounds as if the damaged something or forgot to put something back when the re-assembly started. Do these guys work on Toyotas on a regular basis. Is it the dealer or an independent shop. It sounds like they have screwed up and now they are trying to cover their ass.

Cool

I would have made them put another belt on + any look at the pullies to see of anything was damaged (Including the sprockets), and there would be another new $31 OEM cover put on the thing.
