I have pinpointed (I think) the source of my leak as the distributor o-ring, everything directly under that area is oil covered. I have the oring, and I want to do it myself, but I am a little nervous on making sure the timing stays where it is supposed to be. Do any of you have a link or pics of how you scratch the distributor to make alignment marks etc?
well it kinda hard to mess up, you can mark it with a sharpie where it is and where it's pointing there a gear on the back end so you cant throw the timing too far off. you can rent a timing gun from the local part store and recheck the timing while your in there

just replaced my 95 distributor, because an electronic component had failed.
You need to take off the air intake hose for clearance. Then pull the distributor cap, three screws with a 8mm socket.
Note the rotor position so when you reinstall it it will be the same.
Scribe the distributor case to head position so you can match it when you reinstall. Or you can just scribe the top left distributor bolt/washer position, where it goes through the distibutor case.
The distributer id held on with two bolts, 12mm socket, one is top left, the other is underneath it.
When you change the O-ring and reinstall the distributor, you might have to wiggle the rotor a little bit to get the key to the cam to engage.

Okay thanks, I didn't think of a sharpie. Where should I mark it? Where on the outside of the distributor (Looking at it from the front of the car). WOuld it be good to mark it in two places?

^^That works, also you can mark the location of the housing to the head instead of where the bolts are. I just did this last month, if you mark everything off well you won't screw up your timing!
Word of advice: you will have to break off the old O-ring, it's not going going to slide off the shaft! It's old and brittle, and this is why it is leaking to begin with. Put a light coat of oil on the new O-ring before you install it.

Okay thanks guys, that really helped, I'm going to do it tonight, even though I'm sore all over from our weekend backpacking trip (hopefully I didn't get any poison oak!)
Well, removal of the intake tube and silencer didn't go as smoothly as I would have liked, one of the plastic mounts on the silencer broke, I was torqueing on the mounting bolt for the little sensor thing there and it just snapped . Dumb southern California car, everything is dried out and breaks easy. Anyway, how do I get those stupid clips off of the spark wires? I am having a little trouble with them.
Well, I got them off, only the wire from the coil came off without the clip breaking, but oh well, they wont go anywere (Why Toyota can't just use regular wires is beyond me, maybe I will just replace the wires, that is if they come with the clips) anyway, I got the distributor marked and removed, but now another stumbing block: Car Quest got me the Wrong O-ring size, it is too small, it slides around in the slot. I will have to take the old one in to all the stores tomorrow, or I will have to wait two days for the dealership to order it

Hi. Two things.
You can leave the plug wires attached to the distributor cap, you don't have to remove them. Just take off the three 8mm bolts holding the cap onto the distributor. You need to remove the cap because when you put the distributor back, you may have to wiggle the rotor a bit to get the distributor shaft key to mate with the cam shaft slot.
The O-ring is supposed to slide in the slot, its thickness will be less than the width of the slot, however when it is in the slot it should be a little larger in diameter than the distributor shaft. The old O-ring you are removing may appear wider and might take up the full width of the slot because of its deterioration due to heat, oil, crushing and age.

It's wrong then. It should go above the slot, but it should not be as wide as the slot. Wonder how the supplier buggered up?

I know it is wrong, I went back to the parts store and the dealership and got the right one from Toyota (They had it in stock) I ordered new clips for the plug wires, I get them tomorrow ($5 a pop). Anyway, better to replace them than leave them off. I have to reconnect all of the intake tubes, I used some epoxy to repair the broken mount on the silencer, it weighs nothing so it should hold fine. I hate desert cars! All of the plastic and rubber is dry and cracking.
