The KYB strut mount I bought only came with the upper portion (part visible under hood). The stock setup shows that there is another piece that connects to the bottom of this and holds the spring in place from the top where the struts holds spring in place from the bottom end. Am I to use the this stock bottom part and replace only the top mount piece?
Also the KYB boot looks nothing like the stock. The KYB has a pointed top whereas the stock is flat. Is this going to be compatiable?
The boot is completely different from stock which is what threw me too. I'll take some pics of the struts that I assembled. According to KYB, you can use the stock mounts from the stock strut. I purchased all new just because, though.

Nice. On the stock setup the mount itself does not compress the spring. There's a plate that is attached to the bottom of the mount that holds the spring. So I was confused

As I remember (took the strut off a couple of days ago and had to reinstall because I was confuse) the entire spring was completely under the mount with nothing sticking out. Is this how it is with the KYB setup?
Also, how far did you force the boot down the strut and did you use the provide zip ties for the bottom of the boot?
Oh shit... I'm missing the upper spring seat. That explains alot. I guess I should have ignored the pretty pictures KYB sent and just taken mine apart first. Great, more fun with the spring compressors.
Yes, I used the ties. There was one with the lower strut mount (the lower seat cover) and the one with the boot.
BTW, for those boots, lithium grease and a long flat screwdriver are your friends. Another pair of hands helps (to keep downward pressure on the boot, pushing it down the piston while you work the screwdriver around the sides), but doing it alone is possible, just harder.

Yeah, thinking this is what is getting to me. The KYB mount doesnt include the upper spring seat. So are we to use the stock ones?
Not sure. I'm going to call KYB (again) today and see what they have to say. The guy I talked to originally only said I had to use the stock lower seat, or the KYB replacement; he never mentioned the upper seat. Then again, I didn't ask.
As for the boot, I left the bumper just below the mount. I guess the bumper part is supposed to be as high as possible on the piston without interfering with the mount.

Lower seat? Which part is that? I thought the strut itself holds the bottom end of the spring together. Any luck with KYB?
there are two parts to the upper mount. The part KYB sent you is only the top part with the bearing in it. Use the OEM lower part (the upper spring seat).

Now I'm really confused. The upper part of the mount I have doesn't have a bearing, only the lower part.
The GR-2 strut has a lower plate which has lip. The bearing sits on the lip. The spring seat goes over the lip and bearing. Then the insulator (lower) goes in the 'well' of the lower spring seat. The spring sits on the insulator. Is this different from stock somehow?
I stopped by Toyota this afternoon to look at the OEM mount. Looks just like the KYB mount with the 'nubs' at the bottom of the studs (so the bottom surface isn't flat). Parts guy says 'no upper (OEM) spring seat, just the mount'. KYB says the same.
So... is there or isn't there an upper spring seat?

You can thank me, it was my thread and my pic
A stock assembly has...
Strut
Spring
Lower Insulator
Upper Insualtor (also has the dirt gaurd on it)
Spring Seat (upper seat because the "lower" seat is permanently on the strut)
Bearing
Strut Mount
