Few dayz ago my friend got his 1997 Civic SiR... it was nicely kept by da previous owner... Anywayz... on a Stop light... we were side by side and both of us FLOOR da pedal... (mine is auto)... my 1st gear seemz flyin' 2 da red line, about as fast as da SiR... BUT... when it getz to da 2nd gear @ around 4,000rpm... startin' from dat point da Acceleration is SLOW... it takez FOREVER to hit da 6,200rpm limited and I do Know dat Gen 3 V6 is No MaTCh to SiR (cuz they r light weighted and newer? VTEC engine).. but is it Normal dat a Gen3 V6 to perform like that???
not really....with the ironic part being that there should have been no way you could keep up in first....if anything, our cars pull well in second and third....but off hte line =

Yo yo sick hommie gee u gotar get used to da gen 3 v6 beng lyk dat man.....
Or..you can check your iginition system, sparks, leads, dist etc. The ECT shouldn't make a difference in how quick the motor gets to redline, it simply raises the shift RPM while in D, at WOT.
Oh, and check your language skills while your at it.

The gear ratio of an automatic is no match against a manual.
The factory torque converter doesn't help either.
Overall, Toyota automatic trannys leave a lot to be desired.
You won't get the acceleration nor the optimum shift from an automatic.
it's true that you won't get the acceleration, but optimum shift point you can get with the gen3 trannys and the use of the ETC button.
but the thing is that as much as we may complain, we have to keep in mind what the toyota engineers had in mind when it came to the design of the tranny for our cars, particularly the camrys- they were designed for smoothness and comfort

hm... the ECT was on... but most of da time is off so I guess it didn't learn my drivin' patternz??? hm... this is what I noticed... if started from standstill (0km/h)... and by puttin' da gear in (L)... da car does seemz pullin' faster and all da way to redline (top @ around 50km/h)... then put da gear to (2) and it started @ 4000rpm and keep raisin'... but extremely slow... HOWEVER... if da car is rollin' @ around 40km/h and FLOOR it... it seemz the car will go faster in da same gear... hm... I noticed the car pick up acceptablly in 70km/h - 120km/h range... a bit different from standstill... As for SC... seemz like Gen 3 is not able to use it unless alot of mod... or can't do it @ all... I see a few ppl on this forum has Turbo w/ a Gen 3 rather than a SC... argh... Love this car but it's showin' its age....
my friend told me about the fuel pressure for fast acceleration..... first you half gas at low rpm and floor it at higher rpm... cuz one time my friend driving a stock gen 4 vs my gen 4 (intake mod) both stopping at a red light and he was actually faster cuz when i start off i floored it

That's what I'm sayin'... I can feel that too... But is there any REASON why it reactz like this?

thats cause having your tranny in L is like being stopped and having it in D

^^ i agree.. i can barely read this shit!! but anyways.. im pretty sure toyota didnt engineer the nice camry family car to have a great whole shot of the line or down the stretch.. lol without performances mods, most cars lack alot of pull in any gear in my op[inion.. not to say the camry isnt a fun car to goof around in if you feel like giving her hell lol

In an automatic tranny, the shift points are built into the torque converter; leaving you with enough limitations from having total control of the shift. Only a manual will give you total control of shifting.
I've driven a Gen3 auto with the ECT, and it's no different than my Gen2 I4 Slushbox.
Compared to my Gen2 V6 5-speed.....night and day....
Hello all. I need to disagree about the auto being a slug. I believe if your auto tranny is not accellerating well it probably is because it is need of a rebuild or the kick down cable is out of adjustment. My Camry driving experience is limited to my '90 V6 wagon which, incidentally is in need of a rebuild right now, but I have some experience with a variety of other Toyota Automatics, '72 Corolla 2spd (eventually converted to 3spd) '78 Corolla, '74 Corona and a '86 Van. Everyone of these vehicles performed remarkably differently after just the adjustment of the kick down cable. Shifting later and accellerating much harder.
I am not familiar with the newer electronic trannys but I can't believe that they would be any less capable than the older models.
My Step Son pulled up beside me at a stoplight in his '93 Acura Integra and and was very surprised when the old man's Camry wagon whipped his but. He had never heard the V6 sing her sweet induction song before.
The manual is definately a harder accellerating car but I think the auto can hold it's own if it is in good health.
Just my 2c worth.
By the way ....... Anyone know where I can get a 5spd for my V6?
