Well most of you know that I just recently put in a new radiator. Well. I failed to put one of the tranny fluid tubes on the bottom tightly and it came loose and leaked everywhere. It leaked to the point where the tranny wouldn't shift. I stopped and shut off immediately. Any idea how many quarts I may have lost? I also have no idea what kind of fluid it takes.(noob question) The dipstick says Dexron II. Help me.
I had a similar problem. I recently had my o2 sensor melt a hole through one of the tranny coolant lines. My rippmods header had relocated the o2 sensor to a place where it melted it. The strange thing is that I don't recall the problem when I installed the header nor did I have an issue until about 2-3 weeks ago. I noticed it when my car was being hesitant to shift. I checked the engine bay and at first didn't notice anything, since it apparently was just leaking when there was pressure (when the car was on) and shooting down. Once I located it, I put in a little over a quart of tranny fluid, replaced the line, bent the hardline to relocate it away from the o2 sensor and wrapped the area around it in 1750 degree heat shielding (since I had some in my garage yet from my exhaust) and no more problems.
It's not great for the tranny, but if it was only for a little bit of time, I doubt it'll cause much damage. You should do a flush/fill in the least.
I believe they only sell Dexron IV (or is it III?) now, all other tranny fluids are supposedly backward compatible so you should be good. I believe my car calls for Dexron II as well.
You're in good company, along with the rest of us.

It takes a bunch of fluid if it all came out. They can refuse to shift if they're as little as a quart and a half off if the clutches are in bad shape.
Drive around 10 min, park, check the fluid at idle. You want it to read hot-full.
