valve clearance adjustment

I've noticed a noise from about 1,000 to 2,000 rpm's coming from the engine and I was wondering if the valves have to be adjusted

First thing you can do is use high octane fuel to see if the noise is gone.

stupid response but gas is gas..
i just stick to 76 station. You're getting teh same gas from everywhere. Do you actually believe that some stations run cleaner or better gas?

I'm pretty sure all camrys have hydrolic lifters, so you shouldn't need to adjust valves like that.

gas

Yes most gasoline is the same but different companies add better additives than others, such as detergents.

agreed.
the raw gasoline is the same, but the additives that make it run cleaner/smoother change by company.

you cant really adjust valves. you may hear clicking louder when the oil is low, or you need an oil change. you may hear it louder in cold temperatures. otherwise, it shouldnt be too bad. if there is a serious problem that warrants a head job, then you will KNOW when the sound is too bad.

First thing would be to try to isolate/diagnois the noise. Could it be an exhaust sheild rattling or does it sound like it is in the motor? Can you replicate the noise with the hood up and throttling the engine manually?

Do the low-budjet stethoscope isolation test

Basically find a 2-3 feet peice of rubber vacuum line. Shove one end in your ear, and slowly move the other end around your engine head/block/manifolds/rocker arm cover/accesories/etc. until you find the source of thise 'noise'

What year is your car? What engine type? There was an intake "rattle at idle and accelleration" sound that was fixed with a new intake for 02-04 Camry's.

3rd Generation

I'm not sure about the newer Camry's, but all of the ones through at least '95 have non-hydraulic valves, meaning that as the camshaft and valve-tips wear, the clearance opens up, creating the sound you described. Best defense: get them adjusted and switch to synthetic oil such as Mobil 1.
