Door Molding (guard) removal. Need tips on sanding

I plan on removing the guard on the doors very soon and just needed some tips as far as sanding goes. Terry told me before that I should work around using 1000-1500 grit sand paper that way I dont screw shit up and leave marks on the car.
Basically, I've going to remove the guards, sand under and just around the area, bondo it, and resand it down. My friend will then primer/paint it this weekend (he's a pro, so he can fix anything I screw up on). So it all, what grit do you guys recommend when sanding down, and finishing/smoothing out the bondo??

1000 - 1500 is not gunna do much. Its to fine.

Try 400 - 600.
