Hi guys .... i have read all the thread about overheating but ... no good answeer ... i show you a resume of my car ...
3VZ-FE
1993
221 000 km
new head gasket
new computer temperature sensor
A/C Filled up
The symptom: when i drive (city) and i put the A/C on, my fan continue to turn at "idle" speed and the temperature gauge go in 3/4 zone ... and the fan not go faster ...
You have suggestion ?!
- Solenoid valve ?
- Fan computer ?
thank you!!!

Temperature sending unit, OR (this happened to us btw) iron deposites in your coolant, which retain heat, rather than dissipate. You may need a coolant flush. I would take it to a Toyota dealership and have them troubleshoot what may be wrong.

I have the same car 93 V6 LE with 230K and had a overheating problem it turned out to be the radiator. I had the origional rad still in mine which in my opion was too small for a car with AC. I put in a double core rad and the problem was fixed. Long life coolant breaks down over time and actually clogs the rad.
The coolant is new ... and is not the radiator because the fan keeping the "idle" speed ... i think the problem is in the fan control ... because, before heating, the fan is suppose to run more fast ...
thanks

Open the diagnostics port and bridge E1 & OP1. The fan will go into the higher speed. Then turn the air on and check.
I got news for you man, you've got other problems. The fan being off and the A/C on will not make a 3vz-fe go into the higher portions of the temp gauge. Probably a plugged cooling system, maybe a bad water pump. Flush the entire thing out.

Is the rad origional? If it is you should replace it after 12+ years of service, new coolant will not help if the rad is all crudded up inside. I am assuming you have the hydraulic cooling fan on your car?
hey toysrme...didn't you help me out with the same problem a while back? same overheating problem....I think you told me check out the water temp sensor and something else. Damn, I can't find the thread.
dstlaurent: check the coolant/water temp sensor. If you had overheating problems prior to changing to new head gaskets, it may have affected the sensor, causing it to read faulty temp readings. Get that changed. If it's not the water temp sensor, try the solenoid (since your Camry has a hydraulically driven rad fan). One last thing....does your car have a tendancy to "overheat" even with the A/C off? Will the guage read 3/4 overheat while idling in traffic, but not go any higher? If you have these symptoms, it may be exactly the same problem my Camry had a while back. I got the water temp sensor changed.
When my Toyota dealer has changed my head gasket, the mecanician have not re-plugged the solenoid power cable (two yellow wire). I have plugged it ... and WOW! a great fan sound
thanks you all !!!!

Because this has come up several times for a few people since this thread came up.
Here is the solenoid / plug. It connects into the top of the powersteering pump.
Close up
From the access in the passanger's wheel well.
Only electrical thing there... Yellow wire w' blue strip is + voltage from the cooling fan ECU yellow wire is the - return to the cooling fan ECU.
