Question Reverse Problem

I just got a 91 Camry, for $200, the owner said that the only problem is that when you shift into reverse from park it wont back up, i give it a litte gas and it just sits there. all other gears work fine. they said it has only been doing it for about a month now, ...any ideas...thanx, marie

I had basically the same problem with mine..I have to ask you does neutral act as first gear? If it's an auto the tranny shop told me the forward clutch isnt disengaging and youll probably need a new tranny..I drove my car in neutral for a few minutes and it let go..just gotta be careful with it now..so yeah.. forward clutch.

if the car however doesnt move forward in reverse, it could probably be the reverse band in the transmission. i work on ford tranny's however, but i find this problem alot in post office trucks, and its just a band that goes around a reverse drum, and that band has a tendincy (sp?) to break. but its definitely a tranny problem

then is sounds like the band might be broken, one way to find out if something is real bad, pull the pan and see if there is metal in it. other then that, options are to either buy a new trans, or tear down the one thats in it and find out what exactly went wrong

Yeah, $200, with the reverse problem....couldnt pass it up. , in the process of saving up to get it looked at. I would love to do a 5spd swap but the camry is just my beater. My talon is my baby.
