sorry to jack your thread, but I have a question similar but opposite to yours

The temperature never goes up to the lowest line....though i've changed my thermostat as recoomanded by the Toyota repair shop, nothing changed since

I'm suspecting it's due to the main fan in front of the engine. Btw, I have a gen 3 camry.
Is the big fan supposed to be rotating as soon as you start the car? I mean, it would make sense to have the car "heated" before the fan comes on right?

I just had an critical overheating problem this Friday. It was caused by a clogged radiator. I hate thermostats bcos they always go bad on my car for some reason. So for the past year or two I have been rolling without one. Unfortunately I never saw the need to flush my radiator. I ordered a new radiator and installed it and now my overheating problem is gone. I still dont have a thermostat but I will flush regularly from now on. If you are overheating the first thing to do is fill your reservoir with water. You may have some air in your system. If that doesnt work take the thermostat out completely. This works 99% of the time. In extreme cases the radiator will have to be replaced due to neglect. These 3 things are usually the only things to think about when it comes to overheating (when there isnt a busted or leaky hose in the picture).

What about using cheap coolant that contains less than the recommend Toyota quality? I did a coolant flush and filled up with some cheap Advanced Auto parts coolant. I checked the manual and it shows the levels of the chems in the coolant, both the minimum and max. The coolant I used was way below minimum spec.

Is there a coolant that offers superb protection from rust and corrosion? I was at Advance Auto the other day and their commercial for their in-house antifreeze stated that it had special additives to protect the radiator from rust and stuff. Is this true? Radiators are expensive ($150) and isnt one of the parts that I look forward to replacing if it isnt cracked or busted. I wonder if flushing the radiator is the only line of defense.
