P1705 trans code

Anybody know how to test direct speed sensor on an auto trans? This is a '97 avalon and the code is making the CEL come on. Car runs great otherwise.

read the repair manual at the top of the forum. even tho it's for the gen 3 the info still holds true for your car.

OK, so i test resistance between the two terminals on top of this thing and it's wide open. Remove it and go call to find one. They're 101 dollars at the dealer. Test it again on the bench and it tests OK. wtf? This sensor is about the size of an AA battery and looks like nothing more than a magnet with a coil around it. The parts guy said it's rare but they do go bad and P1705 is the right code for it. I think I shall disect it.

To save anyone else the agony that I went through on this I found this link:
http://autorepair.about.com/library/faqs/bl248h.htm

Additionally I found this sensor to be open when hot and normal when cold. So I drilled some small holes into each short side of the sensor right below the harness connector lugs. I stopped drilling when I reached the conducting material and then mooshed around in there with the voltmeter probes and which restored continuity to the harness lugs. Put the sensor in the grill to heat it up a bit and it still worked so back in the car it went after being wrapped up with some hi-temp tape. Reset the ECU and test drove it for 4 cycles and the CEL stayed out. Ghetto but it works.
