4th Generation What are good starter modifications for a stock '99 Camry?

I have a 4 cylinder 99 Camry that's stock and I'm interested in doing some modifications to it.

I'm interested in modifying the exterior and the performance both. I've seen some cool tricked out Camry's but I don't really know all of what was done to make them look that way. I know part of it is the body kit, and part the rims. Are those the main two things you really notice?

I would also like to improve the performance of it. I've known for a while now it's needed new suspension so I bought some KYB GR2 struts and I will probably put those on this weekend. Are there good engine modifications I can do for cheap to increase hp? I know a lot of people change the muffler & exhaust pipe, right?

I don't have a lot of extra cash, so price is a factor.

Thanks for the imput guys & sorry im a newb at this.

well, for me i wont be changing the entire piping and all the system. I am just changing the muffler and tip. You should consider some sound system too, there are many cheap ones on ebay. Also your headlights try to mod them look around and you should see many camry's like yours but with mods. Look what they have and if you like it do it to yours.

Some 19 inch BBS RK wheels, TRD body kit and lower it that will make it look nice for starter.

The first real mod I did to my Camry was my springs... then I bought my wheels. Those two items alone improved the look of the car significantly.

I have a cf hood sitting in my room now waiting to be replaced (I have a lengthly thread about how much DHL sucks... link in my sig), cf muffler waiting to replace my magnaflow, and I have about another grand I want to dump into my suspension..... it's a VERY addicting thing to get into.. so make sure you're ready before you jump in.

NateGhost, I would personally suggest you to do a sport suspension swap first. By doing so, you lower your ride and dramatically increases the handling performance. (Trust me, I play autocross with same 99 Camry LE i4 A/T, and it sucks at turning LOL) I will have my set of JDM TRD suspension setup very soon, along with other mods. But Suspension is the mod that can both benefits you in both looks and performance.

Before you put the struts on get a set of Tein S.Tech springs since you're on a budget. It's a relatively inexpensive mod that will boost both aesthetics and performance aspects.
