Just wondering if anyone's every done this before, or know of where I can get any more info. I've got a '92 Camry 4-cyl that's currently a 5 speed - to make a long story short, I need a car with an automatic, and I'm wondering how much work it would be to swap transmissions, & what other parts would be needed.
I've seen some references to people going from an automatic to a standard - anyone ever gone the other way?
I suppose the other solution is.... anyone in the Greater Vancouver area that wants to swap a automatic gen3 for a standard one?
going to a 5 speed is easier than going to an auto, just locate an auto car and get the trans, motor mounts, drive axles, computer and wiring harnesses in the dash, engine, and center console, trans controller, shifter, cables, indicator and trans cooler and lines, i did this to an 88, its doable but you better know how to read a wiring diagram and have access to the car your getting the auto from

Gee... is that all?
Well, guess it depends on if I can find a good donor car for cheap then...

Yeah, yeah, I know... and that's what I'll probably end up doing. It's just in really nice shape, and we've put some work into it.... and I hate to sell it & play the used vehicle raffle game again. Realistically, it's probably just gonna go though.
Like I said, I just need to find someone local to swap cars with.
not only will you get more power out of your engine with the 5spd BUT will give u better gas mileage plus 5spds are more fun...i wish i had one for my V6...

Okay, since you asked - the long story... my wife hates driving standard, especially in rush hour... and right now, we've got 4 cars (2 MR2's, 1 Celica all-trac, and the Camry)... and they're all standards.
She loves the Camry, but wants an automatic to drive to/from work - she keeps saying it'd be perfect if it were just an automatic.... so, that's how this all started.
^ Sell the camry and get an automatic camry. It's probably more simple and hassle free.
