Custom Welded Camry Short Shifter

Since I have not been able to find a short shifter for my 95 Camry 5S-FE,
I plan to make my own.

Also, I will make a VFAQ for this mod so others can follow this mod with ease.

First of all, I plan to cut and weld a 2"-3" slab out of the upper portion of the shifter (so it doesnt continue to look like a bus shifter)

If I am not pleased with that, I will add a section of metal to the lower two portions, and fabricate/adjust the bumpstops accordingly.

If anyone else has attempted this mod, or had a link or helpful hints to give to me before I begin the project, that would be greatly appreciated.

I'll keep you updated.

Kyle

If you use one of these it will only require minor modifications to the base to clear the lower cable (where you need to grind will be obvious when you go to install it). It will fit a gen 4 shifter base with no mods at all.

Thanks for the heads up, are there any special tools required to remove the actual shifter from the assembly?

I'm familiar with DSM shifters and these Toyota ones are very different (with that ball in the center)

Also, the shop manual does not go into shifter assembly overhaul at all.

It's pretty straightforward. No special tools required. The tricky part is getting the nylon caps off the stock shifter to re-use on the short shifter. I used a small (10mm or so, whichever is the smallest that will clear the ball) open-end wrench in a vise to hold the nylon, and pounded the shfiter out with a punch and hammer.

I was reffering to the nylon bushings where the cables attach. The pivot bushing is slotted if I recall, so you can just pull.

Thanks for the compliment.

Looks like you have had quite a few nice cars. My dad had one of those Studebaker pickups when he was growing up.
