My car is black and i spraypainted my grill, door handles and mirrors silver...still needs 2 more coats but its lookin good...

What i did was use 400 sandpaper and sanded down everything i was goin to paint---removed the finish and then cleaned it (water) and then sprayed it....seems to have worked for me....

sand is down with that 400 paper... then sand is with a fine paper to get it smooth.... prime then paint. do a couple coats or so.

what also works good on those plastic pieces like the grill is a plastic bond aid that u can buy at any car or hardware store. I painted my grill and all my engine covers with that as my basecoat and i haven't had one chip even with the heat of the engine.
