Ticking noise when turning steering wheel over, far?
I noticed that the 1997 Camry LE that I'm driving is beginning to make a ticking noise when the steering wheel is turned (close to) all the way left, or all the way right.
The tick increases with road speed (not engine speed), so I'm pretty sure it's a wheel/tire/brake/axle issue.
The car has 104,000 miles, and the axles were replaced with the CV boots, last year.
Does anyone have an idea what the ticking could be from? Is it of immediate concern? Has anyone else ever had this problem?
Im having the same problem with my 1994 Camry Coupe LE...it's driving me f***ing crazy. I am taking it into a mechanic soon. I've heard this is a common problem on Camrys.
It could be a bomb gone dud. J/k. If could be like you said, your suspensions, but it could also be the signal switches and all. Have it checked out and tell us what the problem was.
so you turn your wheels ALL the way when you drive huh??? wierd, cause i pretty much never do while driving... maybe while parking or something... but then, its normal to hear a whining/screaching when you turn the wheel the whole way.
as far as ticking when you turn at all.. could be a lot of things.. from the suspension to the tie rod ends even down to a bad tire, low tire pressure or a bolt or nut loose somewhere in the brakes/control arm/tie rod/steering knuckle/strut/etc...

Sounds like the ticking is an outer CV joint. Was the whole half axle replaced, or just a broken CV boot fixed?

i had a similar problem man... what ended up fixing the noise on my car was the front oscillatior bearings... u can either buy new ones of from what i heard u can also just go your local automotive store and buy bearing grease and grease the crap outta the ones u currently have... if your wondering where theyre located, there right underneath your upper strut mount on the suspension for your fron 2 wheels, theyre basically a pivot point for the front suspension while turning... hopefully this works for u man!

Update: It's more of a double tick (almost like a click), and it ONLY happens when I have the wheel cut to the left (one rotation or more), and the sound increases with load; ie. if I go faster and cut the wheel harder, it will click louder.
Any thoughts?
I sometimes turn the wheel all the way over when I'm taking a tight U-turn. I understand that turning the wheel that far entices some type of hiss, but the click is not because of that. It might be the suspension, but I think it might be related to steering, because I only hear it when the wheel's cut to the left. What's a tie-rod?
When I had the axles serviced, I got new ones, and replaced the CV boots, and had them repacked. I had them done at Midas, last summer. How long do new axles last? Can Midas check it out?
I haven't checked out the oscillator bearings, but I will ASAP. I really hope it's something that simple (in theory).
I don't think it's the turn signals switches because it still ticks when I don't have the indicator on.
i'd have midas check it out, because they should have a warantee on their parts, im sure they'd check it out for free... and then you dont have to speculate on the problem. they will know even if it wasnt their job that is going bad. so there is really no loss going there...

Don't understand. New axles should come complete, with CV joints and new boots already in place. If they just repack the old ones and put on new boots, then the joints can still be bad.
The clicking might be annoying, but with the servcing they should last a long time, unless the noise makes you want to spring for new axles.

Sorry, newbie mistake. I tried to make it seem like I knew what I was saying. What I meant to say is I got new axles: they came with CV joints and NEW boots. They did not repack the old ones.
Otherwise, since the axles were replaced only a year ago, I'm hoping a little ticking is no big deal, and it won't need any more servicing for another 80,000 miles.

It sounds like that's my best bet. I'll try to drop it off ASAP and have them check it out.
i've heard of CV joints going bad within a month because they are just poorly made. one of my friends had to get them changed 3 times before they were good.
Looking at replacing my axles too in my 97 XLE, 4 cylinder. Prices for new drivers OEM axle is $309. Cardone rebuilt is 77 at RockAuto. NAPA rebuilt is 99. Raxle rebuilt is 119. Anyone with experience with any of these (other than OEM)?
