3s-fe transmission question(please help)

i have a 1988 camry that i bought a 1989 3s-fe ( or a 1990 3s-fe?) jdm motor for after a rod bearing went. it has an automatic transmission but when i put it all back together the transmission doesn't want to engage. the motor turns on and works fine but the tranny won't engage no matter what gear(p,r,n,d,2,1) i put it in. i was wondering, do all year 3s-fe motors work with each other? also, the original motor was a 6 bolt the new one is an 8 bolt, does this make any difference? both flywheels mate up to the torque converter but both don't match up to the crank. do i need a new tranny to accomadate the new motor? does anybody out there know what to do, i would love to get this car running and out of my life...thanks in advance for all of your help.

Are you sure that the fly wheel is properly mated with the transmissions shaft. did you repalce the tranmission at the same time as the motor? if you have i would drop the pan and check if the filter is still there and before that check the fluid leve, check electrical connections, chek cooling lines and also smell the trans fluid and make sure that it doesn't smell burnt.

The tranny will work, you just need to get the appropriate flex plate and torque converter.

And make sure the linkage is connected...dont forget about that

6 bolt or 8 bolt crank makes no difference. You just need the correct flexplate (6 bolt or 8 bolt) to bolt onto the engine.

Automatics use a flexplate, not a flywheel.

He has a auto tranny. So the input shaft on the tranny mates to the torque converter.
