ok so im having problems with my brake lights. at first i think it was the bulb, so i went out and got a new one. all of them were working except for that one. when i was taking it out, my pliers accidentally touched the harness(metal part) and i thought i shorted out the whole brake light system because now everything didnt come on except for the third brake light inside the cabin.
so i checked all the fuses underneath the steering column and in the engine compartment, checked all rear bulbs. i noticed that all the rear lights will turn on when my headlights are on, but when i step on the brake, they will not light up. im not an expert by far on electrical issues, but could this be a relay of some sort? i know i didnt short it because they still work, so as the subject line says, im STUMPED. my inspection is in august too so i want to try and figure this out.
interesting problem....does sound like relay...take a look at the wiring diagram in the haynes manual and see if there is a relay for the rear lights....there should be one, but where it is, and what kind of relay is beyond the top of my head
the other question is this tho-
you say that the lights work when you have your headlights on, but does that mean that they light up even more when you press the brake too? or does it just come on as the regular lights?

Brake light bulbs have dual circuits. A "bright" circuit and a "dim" circuit. Since the running (dim) lights work when the headlights are on, and the stop (bright) lights dont work when you step on the gas, you probably shorted out the "bright" circuit... just replace your stop-light bulbs.

Glaring blue HID bulbs are NOT classy, and don't make your car look nice, no matter what that kid in the Civic told you.
it just comes on as the regular lights. when i press the brake pedal, they dont light up at all. the only one that lights up is the third brake light inside.
Well... the brake light consists of both the running light circuit, and the stop light... it goes from dim to bright when you press on the break. Chances are, you shorted out the bright circuit on those bulbs. It should be the same in all brake light bulbs...

Well, it might not necessarily be the case, but personally, I wouldn't know what else could be causing it. I replaced both of my brake light bulbs on my Gen 5 the other day because... for some reason... the bright circuits on both bulbs blew... and only my spoiler LED brake light worked... once I replaced both bulbs, they worked fine.

but if i possibly shorted the inner right one that i replaced, shouldnt replacing it have solved the problem? or could blowing the circuit on one blow the circuit on the rest?
I believe that its possible... but I'm not sure... as far as blowing the rest of the circuits, you'd have to ask someone with more electrical experience... I just do bulbs. =P

White3chocolate is right about the bulbs having two filaments. The "parking"lights will come on with the headlights, but if the breaklight filament is out, one or both bulbs may not light up. Change both since they come in packs of 2 so that you don't have to replace the other one in a few months when it burns out.
i bought a pair of 1157 bulbs for the inner brake lights. but the thing is, none of the rear ones work. would replacing the inner ones possibly solve the problem? or if what u guys are talking about is true, would i have to replace all 4?
^ if what he said was true, then yes, you'll have to replace all 4 bulbs since they are all dual filament...though for real, I don't see that happening just from a short....

^ underneathe the brake pedal should be a switch that activates the brake lights when you step on the pedal. Look under there and make sure there is still a good connection to the pedal, wires are intact etc. Thats my 2 cents.
