2nd Generation Removing aftermarket tach?

My 89 camry didnt come equiped with a tach from the factor, so a couple years ago i went to autozone and picked up a sunpro tach, and had it installed on the a pillar. A couple months ago i went to a junk yard and picked up a gauge cluster with a tahc, and it looks real good. Now, i want to get rif of the aftermarket tach because it just doesnt look that good in the interior. So i was wondering how i go about removing it? How do i remove the dash on the drivers side to reach the wires? Where would the wires be connected to?

Ummm... just pull the wires out? It should be obvious under the dash what wires weren't there from the factory. Pull them out. Pull the tach out. Done.

Ya i figured that, but how do i get to those wires? I have to remove the dash so i can get behind there to reach the wires, then ic an tell which ones are from the tach. Whats the easiest way to get behind to reach the wires? Is removing the dash the only way?

dude just remove the a-pillar and then follow the wires to wherever they are. you can also pick up a new a-pillar w/o holes at the local yard.

ok here's my question, does the tach work in your new gauge cluster? if it does then you can just cut the wires for the old a-pillar mounted tach and forget about it. but if the new gauge cluster tach doesn't work then you'll need to remove the gauge cluster and and the a-pillar and follow the wires from the old tach to the wire harness behind the gauge cluster. disconnect those wires and reconnect the tach wire to the harness and plug it into your new tach equipped gauge cluster.

the tach in my gauge cluster works, and so does the one on the a pillar. With the gauge cluster out, the wires from the tach on the a pillar are not visible.

well if the tach in your gauge cluster works then just remove the tach from your a-pillar and cut the wires behind it. no need having two tachs and its not gonna hurt anything if there's wires still behind your dash for the disconnected a-pillar tach.

^As long as you tape them up so they don't touch any metal.
Follow the wire and see where it goes. It may not connect to the dash. It could go direct to ECU, ignitor or disturbutor.

well thats the thing, i cannot follow the wires because they run from the a pillar down begind the dash, so the only way to follow them would be to get behind the dash somehow.

Why is this so hard??

Remove tach, cut wires, remove black plastic trim under dash near your feet, look up to find wires hanging down, pull them out. you don't have to get behind the top of the dash. Whoever installed it didn't do it that way, why should you?

alright soudns good, i was just trying to keep the wires attached to the tach sop i could resell it on ebay. They sell for the same as new on ebay so y not make the extra money. So all i have to do is remove the black plastic piece under the dash, look for the wires, cut them, then pull the tach off? Great thanks for the responses
