oil catch can

ok looking at nate thread i'm going to start one on this. exactly what does it do.

i saw tony say something about having the PCV set as a vent system.

which would be better.

i'll post a picture later of my ghetto setup. (fuel filter as a catch can, and set as vent)

It catches oil droplets caused by blowby, etc... and returns the vapors to the engine or vents them to the atmosphere.

Ideally you want the vapors to return to the engine, this way its a closed system. In the case of turbocharged cars, you might not want to do this as the compressor will get oily overtime.

yea - mine vents out into the atmosphere... i am going to filter the otherside... just in case some oil goes through - i don't want to be dripping any shit into my engine bay

some people feel catch cans are a little more bling than anything else - but on mr2oc others said that when they used one with a 5s turbo - they were able to stop any oil smoke from the exhaust which they had been having problems with

On DSM's Catch Cans are strongly recommended as not to recirculate all that oil vapour through the turbo, and most importantly, the Intercooler.

A oily intercooler decreases cooling efficiency noticeably, and most people would rather install a ghetto or purchased catch can rather than cleaning out the IC on regular intervals.

In my old K5 Blazer, I simply used a Clear In-line fuel filter aft of the PCV valve, and just replaced the filter (a few bucks) after it collected enough oil.

Companies such as Greddy sell Nice Catch Cans for such a high price, you could buy hundreds of in-line filters.

But like it was already previously mentioned, getting an actual *catch can* is more cosmetic than anything.
