Auto transmission fluid check

What is the proper way for checking the transmission fluid. i have heard that the tranny should be put on R with the engine running and check with the dip stick but does it applies to camry. mine shows a little higher than the recommended level. will it effect the tranny.
(97 camry le 4cyl)
Thanks

Try reading the dipstick. I'm quite sure the instructions are on it. P or N NOT R!

Start the car and then drive it until it is warm (about 15 minutes or so). Now stop on level ground and slowly, starting in low, place the gear selector in each gear and count to 2. Go from low to park and then back down to low, counting to 2 each time. Now put the car back in park, leave it running and check the dipstick.

I go 2 - 3 years or 30,000 miles. I'll let you do the conversion.
