OK Fixed.
Drive a few (40) kms / miles and then stop. undo gas cap, and if there is no whoosh or hiss, then check the gas cap seal. Dab some oil evenly onto the filler tube lip, all the way around and put cap on. Remove cap and check that there has been a good seal.
Then if there is a whoosh after the next few kms, then the loose gas cap was culprit.
I was not so lucky though.
After doing that , and clearing the ECU memory, the CEL... returned.
It was the VSV $84CDN

.
On Gen4 that were made in +98 the evap canister is on the rear of the gas tank. I would spray it with degreaser, and then hose it off. Jack up the car, and block it. The VSV is held by a small plillips screw and is hard to get at.
I went to the dealer and told the parts manager about the part, and if they would pay for it, as it was emmissions related. I did not get anywhere other than a 15% discount.
1 hour later, I had it replaced.
If you do not have a dealer nearby, Nissan # 14956V is the equivelent part, by ASIN. In the nissan pathfinder/frontier or pre 98 camry, it is located in the engine compartment and can be changed in like 10 minutes
