Can O2 sensor be used in place of Air/Fuel Ratio Sensor?

My mechanic told me the "air/fuel ratio sensor" on my 99 Camry was bad.

It screws into the exhaust manifold before the catalytic converter, and looks exactly like an oxygen sensor.

The dealer part is about $280. Can I use an O2 sensor instead, which costs about $50, and looks almost exactly the same?

Thanks

No you can't just replace an air/fuel sensor with an O2 sensor. They are two different type of sensor. They look the same but the air/fuel one has four wires I belive and has different voltage readings than an O2 sensor.

Could u resolve your A/F sensor problem??

I have a check light indicator and have codes p0171/p1133/p1135 that look like pointing to the A/F Sensor.
Could u get the A/F sensor at better price and were u able to replace it yourself or have to give it to a dealer?
I want to try to replace it myself if it is'nt a great deal. Don't know its exact location. Mne is a Toyota Camry 97.
Thanks

You can do it yourself (I've done it on my car...). Its on the exhaust though, so its probably stuck on there tight. If you want to do any work on your car get a repair manual (Haynes, Chiltons, or official Toyota) and check it out. The main a/f (or oxygen) sensor is on the exhaust just below the manifold, assuming you have a 4 cylinder. Just make sure you have the correct part if you do it yourself. So, just get a repair manual and read up on it to see if you think you can do it.

It could, among other things. If your engine doesn't turn on the check engine light, its probably fine though... There are ways of checking it if you really want to do see if its functioning correctly.

You should be able to check the code for free at an auto parts store (I can't remember which one. Autozone, I think). Get that done ASAP, you shouldn't be running aroudn with a check engine light on...
