Whats up boys & girls.. My transmission light is dead, and rather then reading the manual and looking into the fues box (i'm lazy) I was wondering if anyone would know if it would be the light or a fues. I figured that if it was the fues, more lights would be off in the interior, but that is not the case. Hopefully I can get a reply soon so I can go to good old Canadian Tire and fix this today.. Thanks
-peace

I went to a Toyota dealer today, and they said it costs $1 for the bulb, and $100 to replace (aprox. 1hr of service). The whole console starting from the arm rest/box must be removed in order to get at it. f*** that sh**, I'll just wait until I kill this trans. and get a standard box.

Huh? If it's just the light bulb, I can change it for you for $50!
I think it only took me like 10 minutes to take apart of that and put a red bulb in there.
You got a haynes manual? Hmm actually you don't even need that, just pray the upper plastic piece open along the side opening and you will see the light bulb sitting right underneath.
Just want to clarify, you're talking about the transmission indicator right at the gearbox right? If that's case, it's not necessary to remove the whole console in the first place. If you're talking about the light inside where the rev/speedometer sits, then you'll need to spend about an hour to remove the console and put the light back in.
You still have to take the whole front end and dash apart before you remove the bezel, no? I don't think it should take more than half hour to 45 min for the dealer but they'd like to charge an hour.

$100??? On my 92, I can change in it 45 seconds...all i have to do is remove the bezel, then a black trim piece and that's it!
The 97 must be different...or else they're screwing you big time!

You don't need to remove the armrest at all. The auxiliary cigarette lighter, "trapezoidal" plate, and shifter panel are all one piece. The area around the shifter is held down by clips. So pry them up and pull back towards the rear of the car. You may want to put the gear into 'N'eutral first for more room to turn the panel. Then disconnect the lighter plug. You probably will have to release the plastic panel over the gear indicators to see the burned out bulb. Use a small flathead screwdriver for that.
