car revs when started

I am going to be buying a 1993 camry from a tow yard for real cheap. its got 203K miles but looks pretty good. the only thing that I noticed is when the car is started the engine will rev up really high. 4500+rpm currently the weather is 104+ degrees. I noticed that there is a screw keeping the throttle open partially. I was able to turn the screw so the throttle would be able to close and the idle would return to a more normal range. The vibrations of the engine will rotate the screw back so after a while it sticks out enough to keep the engine going. my question is what is that screw doing there in the first place? I know nothing about toyotas...I'm really a honda boy forced into the evil cruel world of automatic sedans.

welcome to the world of toyota.

thats normaly an evil honda trick where people who cant drive manuals use to increase/lower their rpms so it's easier for them to drive a manual.

the old owner might have put that there because the IAC valve might be sticking giving it a rought idle. just search around here with a screw driver and some cleaner you can get it running like new again.

So can I remove that screw? its not even a whole screw just the threads without the head.

I'll look around and try to find this Valve that you speak of. My Honda was killed right as I was getting to know all the workings. I'm not poking at toyotas I hear they are great cars I've never owned one. I'm not exactly thrilled to have an automatic car let alone a sedan. but life could be worse I could get stuck with a ford.

Well, I would adjust it to a proper idle speed, then back it out 3 turns or so, and add a drop of thread locker (loctite) and turn the screw back in the 3 turns.
