3rd Generation Window Troubles

I got some problems with my windows. And Im at wits end.

It all started with the rear driver side window. It will go down, but not up from both the door button and the master switch at the driver door. I wiggled the wire around while holding the switch to the "window up" position and it went up after a few tries. So I said, its probably just the wire getting old from all the flexing and Ill fix it later. So a few days later, my passenger window does the SAME THING! But without the flexing and fiddling with the wires, it eventually just went up after a few minutes of putt the switch in the up position. And then, the VERY next day, the REAR PASSENGER window does the SAME thing! WTF?! So basically, all the windows in my car go DOWN just fine. But not back up. All except the Drivers side window and the moonroof. The Drivers window and Moonroof work just fine. I really need your help guys cuz Its summer and I need these windows down. If my AC dies, Im gonna stop driving the car. lol

I assume there might be a problem with the dirver switches or something. there might be a short or a loose wire? Can someone confirm or correct this cuz I dont want to take the damn door apart and find that the problem is elsewhere.

Ok it has been a long time since I have done work on one of those but if memory serves me right you are looking at the master switch in the drivers door. Everything runs through there so it would make the switch on individual door not work also. Like I said it has been a while but I think that is your problem. unfortunately I can not remmeber for the life of me how to go about checking it to verify.

I think that when it comes to p/window circuits in general they run on "shared circuitry" where all the windows wiring share common wires like your power & ground. If you can check the harness that runs through the drivers door that has the weather shield around it by carefully cutting it open & inspecting the wires & gently tugging on the harness either way. Either than that, find a wiring schematic for your window circuit & start the hunt. I'm thinking it's a ground

^ I only have a Toyota electrical manual for a gen 2.

Try asking Zoni. I know he has electrical manuals for a gen 3.

Also try the link below. The diagrams in a Toyota electrical manual are much better though.

I spotted your post on another thread but that thread was closed and can't respond.

I'd bet money the problem is inside the motor/regulator. These devices haven't changed for many years and I'm one of the few who's taken one apart and looked at the guts (most people just replace them). As the motor winds up there is a round plate that goes around. The power going to the motor runs through this plate via brushes and as the plate reaches 11 O'Clock (or wherever "UP" is) the electrical connection to the motor is broken bringing the window to a halt before it tries to bust the window.

I'm oversimplifiying this a little bit because there are actually two traces, one trace for up and one for down.

The problem is that most power window motors are sealed units and very difficult to get into. As I said they are designed to be replaced, not repaired, so you have a 50-50 chance of being able to fix the old one.

I'd stop messing with the switches or wiring. None of that will get you anywhere. The switch just applies power to the wires and reverses polarity. Obviously if either of the wires was bad the window wouldn't work at all in either direction.

Hope this helps

But the wierd thing is that If I pull on that bundle of wires, the switch will work perfectly fine and the window can go both up and down as long as Im pulling on that bundle of wires that connects from the door, to the pillar.

The minute I let go, the window cannt go back up again. Though it can go down.

Update: Now after putting everything back together and getting all the windows to work again, the window cannot be brought down even from the master switch.
