Have a '89 Camry, 3sfe auto. Problem is, when accelerating from a standing start the car bogs down. Once the car is going there is no problem accelerating. Fuel pump has been recently changed. Sparkplugs are fine. Changed one of my 2 o2 sensors yesterday. I am thinking it could be a fuel injector leak as the gas mileage has gone down. Any suggestions?
Replaced engine & trans 30k miles ago, with engine from Japan. So engine should have approx. 70-90k by now. The engine had an external coil, unlike our US cars, so I put a Jacobs variable ignition coil along with Nology sparkplug wires (has approx. 30k now). Also have pacesetter header, complete 2" exhaust and K&N cone type airfilter.
I have an 89 3sfe auto tranny equipped gen2 just like you do and have experienced similar problems in the past. what i did first was clean out the throttle body like one of the other members suggested. then i decided to adjust my throttle cable tightness by loosening the nuts on either side of the throttle cable and then pulling the cable away from the throttle body. make sure not to tighten it too much and to retighten the nuts after you have the cable in the desired position. after doing this, the acceleration was much improved and the engine didn't bog nearly as bad.
Check your throttle position sensor as well - this was the cause of similar problems with ours.
Pretty inexpensive and easy to replace.
Further "zero tools" test would be this:
floor it in transmission "power" mode.
do shifts happen before redline, maybe around 5500?
If so, throttle position sensor not giving correct signal to tranny computer.
I would be investigating vacum leaks as well, I have had many cars with bad accelleration which was vacum leaks. Plug leads could be a possibility as well.If it isnt an OEM ignition system there could be issues with spark voltage and so on... I would start with running around with a can of carby clean, clean and check for vacum leaks. DOn't forget to spary the injectors as well.
Looks like problem solved! Did a fuel filter change and throttlebody cleaning. Both were very dirty. Fuel filter was extremely dirty! Car doesn't bog anymore.
Thanks guys for all the help!!!!! Much appreciated.
