Question Drum Brake removal (How?)

Hey Guys.

I just want to check my rear drums on my car. I got the haynes Manual, but the "Drum" section is worded so "whoa" I'm having trouble understanding it.

I take off wheel, then, how do I remove the outta drum so I can view the "shoes" in there?

Second, I just got some BREMBO BLANKS for the FRONTs! (yay ) How would I take off the rotor? They just yank off? Haynes said, just to remove the studs, and "torque plate?"

Thanks guys, I'm clueless at this moment...

The drum brake cover should just pull off once the wheel is off. If it doesn't budge, try wacking it a bit with a mallet. If that doesn't work you may have to wind the star gear through a hole in the back if your car has that.
As for the rotors, once the wheel comes off the caliper is the only thing holding it on. Remove one main bolt on the caliper and loosen the other then pivot it up out of the way. The rotor just slides right off the wheel studs after that!

ah, ok.

I did my brakes before (fronts) and I recall sliding the caliper up. Thought I had to remove the whole thing.

And as for the back, wow, sounds easy. I'll give this all a try something.

Thanks a bunch~

sometimes they rust themselved onto the hub -- which means its a giant pain in the ass to get them off the hub. That happened to me, and we had to heat up the rotor with a torch, dump cold water on it then smash it with a sledgehammer.

fun.

cross your fingers!

There are two bolt holes on the outer face of the drum. You can get two bolts start screwing them into the bolt holes. Make sure you alternate them though, tighten one a little then the other and so on and so on. before you do that just spray it down good with some WD-40 or something similar. This is if they happen to be rusted to the hub a little bit.

Cyorke is right on the money. Just remember to leave the emergency brake off LOL.

As far as removing the front rotors, you do have to remove the caliper first. It's should be 2 14MM bolts. Tie it up out of the way. Use some mechanics wire or an old coathanger and hang it on to the coil spring. Do not let the caliper hang by just the rubber brake hose. Then remove the torque plate (caliper mounting bracket). That should be 2 17MM bolts. Then, if it won't pull right off, use the same 2 threaded holes as the brake drum. Same idea.
