If I rememebr right there was somethignstated about the key code being on the drivers side key cylinder. I have never personally used this but it is wortha shot. you ahve to take the door panel off to get to it. But will be cheaper than having Toyota get it using the VIN. You could also try calling around to a couple of locksmiths to see if they can get the key code for you. The one we use at work charges like 25 bucks to get the code and then whatever the key costs.

I hope I never lose my key. Got the engine disabler on my '05 SE and the key has a coded chip in it to enable the engine. Major moolah for replacement. Only available through the dealer by ordering through them from the factory.

I did this a few weeks ago at the dealership. Give them your VIN number and they'll make you a key. If you don't need the key that actually has the Toyota logo on it, it's cheap. It was under $10.

Wasn't to much when I went to the dealership to get a new key. My key I got with the car was so rounded off It barely worked. They pulled the vin, and the car didn't register. Said it was either a dealership show car, or something else. That to get the key code you have to look at the passenger side key slot. To do this they will charge you some serious cash. To do it yourself you have to take apart the passenger side door pretty much to get to it. Then there are two sets of digits on the key slot frame. Don't remember which is which. Did it myself, and the only problem I ran into was the E clip fell off and I lost it in the grass, so I had to get another one to hold the lock in place or else it wouldn't work.
