Rust = not my friend

Alright, a few of you tell me I need to do more to my car, and here is why I won't, currently. The rust I see seems to be pretty common on this model camry, and although mine isn't the worst I really don't want to pay someone to fix it for it to come back in a few months.

Here's the pictures I took today:

this is over the rear wheel passenger side, the worst spot. If you have the trunk open you can see light looking up through it.

This is some more just further along the wheel arch of the same corner.

Here is the back side of that same rusty area. I'm sure there is more rust if I tore all the carpet out, but I didn't feel like that today.

The rest is about the same as that, and at least one front fender needs to be replaced, if not both.

The rest of the pics are here: http://photobucket.com/albums/y298/j...?sc=1&multi=19

What I really want ot know, is it worth trying to do this myself? I don't have the money really to pay someone to do it now, and I fear if I wait until I do (a few years down the road) it will be even worse. If it is worth trying to at least prep myself, I'm curious what sort of worth will be involved and a general procedure. Thanks.

Wait 'til the TN pro kids come along but my guess would be that you'd have to sand off that rust, assuming there is still real metal under there. You can coat it with anti-rust chemicals (A la. "rust bullet") and then repaint it your stock color.

-To remove rust spots from your car, rub spot with a piece of crumpled foil or #0000 steel wool, or try sponging off with brand name colas. Boiling water works well, too.

-Corrosion can be removed with club soda or baking soda and water.

a lot of it is just total rust, no metal to sand down to.

sand it to metal, fill it if need be and coat it with Por-15 - www.por15.com - other wise sand it smooth and prime it.

A lot of hot roders, if not all, doing frame off resto's use Por-15. The shit is ...well, the shit!

In some spots it might just be easier to pick up NOS (new old stock) or good salvage panels (i.e. the fenders, doors, etc...)

I'd think sanding would be okay, but there are holes in the damn panels :-/

guess I need to take it to a shop and get an estimate

cut about 1/2 inch above the metal and then get new sheet metal and weld it in place spot welds work good or a gas welder. make sure that you size and shape the new metal before cutting it. after all that body filler and primer will do the trick. then get it painted the stock color. on areas that you can sand down to shiny metal do it if you can poke through it some what or it feels weak cut it out thats the only wat to get rid of the rust.
