It is for NVH and to keep the surface temp down if you touch it.
Paint should not bubble, but it could discolour it from the heat and cause the clear coat to turn milky/ crack and look ugly but that should take a long time, don't forget your hood baked by the sun all the time with UV as well.

heat shield servces two purposes:
1. insulate the hood against excessive heat, but some of the celica guys have proven this wrong by removing the heat shield..and they still didn't have adverse effects ( i wouldn't on my car)
2. if there is an engine fire, the heat shield is supposed to damper the fire by falling on the fire to prevent it from spreading...IMO, rather than damper the fire, it will just give you more time to get out of the car..then act like an extuingusher...

do many fires start by the headers ?
i removed my heat shield (partially, the upper side, the bolts are a bit rusty on the lower part) to paint it black. unfortunatly i broke something: there are 2 nuts securing the upper and the lower shields to the headers themselves, while removing the left hand nut, i broke the lug. so for the time being i'm driving around with only the lower shield. ('till my shop opens again, they're on vacation now).

ive had mine off on my solara for proly over 6 months now...nothing has happend. some of my friends(02 civic si and 04 volvo s40) have had theirs off for over a year now and nothing has happend
doesn't seem to make a difference, tho it could on certain cars with engines that run superhot
I took mine off 3 years ago, now I have a new hood because of an accident, but nothing ever went bad with my old one- no paint problems, etc, tho the hood now steams more when it's raining and I'm stuck in traffic

^^ That pretty much should sum off any 'ill effects' if any for camry!
First of all, the thread was about hood heat shields, not header heat shields. Second, why the f*** would anyone wanna remove the hood heat shield??? Maybe I'm missing something....
It does? I thought it just looked... black... I've popped my hood countless times, and I've only even noticed it there pretty recently. Its not really an eyesore... so I can't understand why someone would want to remove it.

Glaring blue HID bulbs are NOT classy, and don't make your car look nice, no matter what that kid in the Civic told you.
shouldnt be any problem removing it, my hood doesnt ven have one at all
