2nd Generation Pulling Engine / Driveaxles

I was ready to unbolt the driveaxles so we could yank the engine out, but, surprise surprise, there were no fasteners where the Haynes said there should be. Spent some time searching and found the threads talking about removing the driveaxles that have the snap rings. Looks like something I don't want to do, if there's a way around it (looks too easy to break something).

Is there a way to remove the engine while leaving the transaxle (and driveaxles) in the car? (automatic, if it makes a difference)

Keith

I don't think theres any way to leave them in. It's really not that hard to remove them.
For the LH side one, remove the 30mm hub nut, and turn the wheels lock left. Then remove the brake caliper and unbolt the strut from the hub. Lower the hub and afix the caliper somwhere out of the way. Do this for the other side too. Then just pull the driveshaft out, being careful not to seperate the CV boot, or you'll be in strife! Try tapping the back of the with a hammer and wood to get it out of the tranny. The other side is simple too. Just remove the big clip on the carrier bearing, by pushing it forward and outwards. Remove the 14mm nut at the top of the carrier bearing. If the strut ir unbolted, hub nut off and hub lowered, the shaft should just come out. It may take a bit of manipulation to get it removed from the hub and pull it out, just move it around in different positions. Quite simple.

Just pop the axles out. You may need a prybar or something, but they just pop out. Make sure the tranny is drained or you will have a puddle on the floor...

yea, you have to pull the crap out of those things to get them to budge. For the passangers side, take the rear engine mount out first, and all the brackets that can be in the way. I always have a problem getting the drivers side out though, seems to always get stuck.
