Okay, ive got a 1997 LE 4cyl and i got a weapon-R short ram intake. Its great, i got a tiny bit of high end from it and a nice deep sound. But im just poking around and i notice my intake is getting hot and its taking in a LOT of hot air from the engine bay. So i start to look for a way to relocate the filter.
During my intake install, i didnt take out the snorkel, cause i didnt need to. So i take it out and i see there is another hole going down below the battery and a big plastic canister. It seems to be where the original intake got its cooler air. So im thinking, if i make (fabricate or just piece together) an extension for my intake, could i relocate my filter to where that plastic canister is (removing the canister of course)?
My main concern is water... but upon inspection of under the car, the wheel well piece actually extends under the bumper to cover up that canister. Im thinking of other ways, getting one of the cold air shields and adding piping... or making a protecting shield so when the filter is under the battery, its protected
well as youve managed to get that far yourself, i say GO FOR IT! dont worry about water, its not THAT bad unless youre going for a drive in a lake.

when i was playing around, i used the RV sewer hose from walmart. worked fine for 2 years. had a SRI conncet to it and the hose ran from teh engine bay to the fender wall. Never melted or anything, just looked ugly HAHAHAHA
Well i got that plastic canister out, and it seems to be a resonator... (figured that out by making noise into it )
So after doing some test fitting with my current SRI pipe, there is room under the fusebox for a pipe of the same size to extend into the fender.
Once i can find decent enough piping (*cough* AutoZone Run! *cough*)
Mabey some of the exhaust flex pipe would work... mabey too expensive. Or just some other type of piping... I do have the Weapon-R "Ram Air kit", dont have to use the little box at the end, just the pipe....
Okay im going back out to check it out, my car is still in pieces in the driveway
I took some pictures, so ill put em up in a little while.
I went to autozone last week, and I saw they have some kind of plastic extension like the akiomoto one. It runs around $24, and it doesn't look that bad.
Okay, well i got the pipe fit in and the filter mounted at the end. Found some mounting brackets and it fitted perfectly.
I have the filter facing the wheel (so its pointed towards the back) so itll be harder for water to get in, im going to leave it there untill the next rain to see if i have to modify anything.
there would be a slight increase in power over a SRI in cold weather.

its even a performance difference over hot weather.
In the engine its THAT much hotter than outside, so since its kinda hot out, its a difference if it was a short ram.
What is nice. Its a lot quieter over the short ram, i kinda like it cause my SRI was just LOUD. Now its a bit louder than stock, but not too loud.
