2nd Generation Gear oil or ATF?

I have just bought a 1991 Camry with 5-speed manual and 2.0L 4-cylinder engine. (248,000 miles and still counting). My Haynes book says to use ATF in the transmission. My local auto parts says their book shows gear oil. I could not find a definitive answer by searching the forums, so I'll ask here if anyone has the right answer--Gearlube or ATF? Thanks.

The compter system toyota uses comes up as follows:

First Choice = 75W90
If unnavailable, use = 80W90
then = Dextron 3
then = Dextron 2

Use 75W90 Gear oil

I find it weird that it even shows ATF on the system, as a LAST DITCH resort, weird.

The manual stated Dexron II ATF for the 4-cylinder 5-speed. People have had good luck with both GM Syncromesh and gear oil...

I had a shop put 90wt gear oil in my 88 corolla I had then. F'd it up bad, couldn't hardly shift gears, took it right back they put in ATF (recommended) I could shift again but the car was never right after that!
