I have this idea of painting my license plate to color match my camry, charcoal grey. i don't like having a white license plate on my dark grey car as it sticks out way too much. i have seen other cars with plate covers of all colors...i would get one yet i do travel out of state sometimes and cops don't like plate covers!
anyway...does anyone know if its legal to alter a state issued license plate ?
my plan... removing my plate, cleaning, lightly sand to rough it up, then laying a sheet of adhesive vinyl over the entire license plate. next carefully cutting around the reflective lettering with an xacto to mask the lettering off. cutting around the state name aswell to mask the state name. painting with primer, sand, primer, sand, then finish coats.
i searched some on my state laws, i live in PA this is some of what i found...
It is unlawful to display on any vehicle a registration plate which is so dirty as to prevent the reading of the number or letters thereon at a reasonable distance or is otherwise illegible at a reasonable distance or is obscured in any manner.
Every registration plate shall have displayed upon it the identifying numbers or letters assigned to the vehicle, the name of the Commonwealth, which may be abbreviated, and any other data the department may deem necessary.
can i legally do this? does my technique for doin it sound ok?
thats like illegal in 30 ways lol. you cannot do anything to the plate like add things on it, but u can get covers. obviously u must be able to see the letters. i think its because ppl must be able to see the content (duh) including state.
thats big time illegal does that work by remote or wat
Yes I need to get some video up but Ive been sick with mono for awhile. There is a power window motor mounted to a piece of mdf behind the back seat. It is hooked up to a trunk release cable I got off a honda accord that is cut to fit between the plate and the motor. The plate is spring loaded to always want to pull into the down position. When the motor runs it pulls on the cable and drags the plate up. Once the plate gets to the end of the track, a splice on the cable hits a limiter switch which cuts power to the motor and stops the plate. Flip the switch the other way and the plate slides back down and hits another limiter switch just as it ends up in the stock location again. The switch is right by my drivers seat.

IMO... Plates come in all different colors and desings, So i don't see why you can't paint the plate, as long as the Number & State are legible I.E. you have a good contrast between plate color, and the numbers. Dont paint the plate BLACK and then have RED letter, If the plate is BLACK, then use, YELLOW, WHITE, SILVER... you get the idea.
And here is another idea, why don't you just ask a cop...or do a google search for pa laws on plates
No need to do research or ask a cop it is ILLEGAL and no questions about it. Before the type of license plate is released it has to pas DMV tests (radar etc.) before the type of plate can be released to be used in public on cars.
the only different styles of plates are different states, military, business, city and county and federal plates, and those memorial ones (pearl harbor survivor, united we stand, etc)if u notice all of these are generally the same design. if u were to paint "i hate pigs" all over the plate with letters, state, and registration showing, u wud still get ur ass busted lol

Here in TN they have all different kinds of plates of different colors etc..
My dad has a "Titans Fan" plate. The number starts with TF (can you guess why?)
Depends. There was a thing in Maine where a bunch of people changed the motto from "Vacationland" to "Taxationland", and it was eventually ruled legal because it didn't interfere with the purpose of the plate or its ability to fulfil its roll. You might get away with a very light silver/grey tone (especially if you have red letter like I suspect) over the white, but you can't do the whole thing matte like they do for car adverts. State laws vary quite a bit, so I would ask. Be sure to ask someone who knows for sure; a higher-up at the DMV, police chief, etc, not a DMV clerk or regular cop as they may not know and will probably tell you no because they're too lazy/busy to get the real answer.

yall forget bout the loopholes in the laws states like colorado and texas(only know because ive lived both places) you can paint on parts of the plate but it has to be in a place where it wont interfere with the number/state and "motto" but as they all said ask a cop or talk to city council about it, or just go the el-cheapo way and use a cover that matches you car with some built in led's so the cops can read the plate numbers(tis what i did
