Gen5 'learning' transmission

Hi guys, I did a search for this topic and couldn't come up with anything, so forgive me if it has been discussed. I'm getting into a used 2004 Camry V6 SE driven by an elderly gentlemen from a Lexus RX300. Now, according to the folks on the Lexus boards, the ECU on the Lexus learns the driving habits of the owner over a couple of hundred miles of driving and sets the shift points based on that driving. Members on that board say to disconnect the battery for 10 minutes to reset this 'memory' and then drive the car like you drive it.

When I drive the 04 Camry, the shift points seem weird to me in various situations like stepping hard on the gas the shifts come too quickly. I guess my question is, can the shift points on this car be relearned by disconnecting the battery or some other method? Thanks again, you guys have been great with my other questions.

4th Generation

Our family just got a Highlander with the smart transmission as well (rx300/330 tranny), and according to my manual if you ever wanted to reset it (ie...change of owndership), you just need to disconnect the battery for a few minutes (i suspect the longer the better), and it should reset the system, and then it should learn you driving techniques. Not sure if its true but thats what it says. Its worth a shot right? All you really risk loosing is ur radio presets and maybe some navi memory if you have that installed.

^ what he said....

the tranny has its own learning computer that sets the shift points to hte driver's driving habits.....by either disconnecting the battery or pulling a fuse, it will reset to factory shift points

^^ Check your window sticker if you still have it. Look for something like ECT-i transmission or Electronic Control Transmission with intelligence. If it just says ECT transmission, it does not have the learning feature.

And like Eye8Pussies said, removing that system's fuse for a short period would work too. In fact, that would be MORE advantageous because then you wouldn't lose all your radio and nav presets and memory.
