I have a 98 Camry V6. With a recent problem of an oil leak I'm forced to decide which way to go. Should I be looking to rebuild my engine or buy a used one?
My engine still runs but valves are sticking like hell and I'm worried that the main bearing has also been damaged.
Just wondering what kind of experience people had rebuilding their engines or buying used.
What should I be asking about, or checking in each case?

depends on who does the rebuild and what warranty the used one comes with, personally I would go with an ATK engine.....their rebiulds are awesome
Any idea what (ballpark) the Camry engines run from them???
The V6 *and* the I-4's?????
And how much they charge for shipping within the states???
And then....................What if you want to have it installed once you receive it & decide there ain't no way in hell you're gonna do that yourself??? Does ATK have a network of any kind for shops and/or dealers (though I can't imagine dealers would be too happy installing NON-factory new engines...LOL) that install them once they come in???
well, ATK's are remannied engines. without checking their site I dunno the prices, I can imagine a v6 is somewhere about 3-4 grand and an i4 is less, most mechs would PREFER to order a good remannied engine and install it, a dealer would tell you to piss off. check the site for the answers
link to camry prices for engines. The four is around 2500 the 6 is around 4000. As far as who can install it I would imagine they would know of someone in your area taht uses them for reman engines and can probably refer you. And you would be surprised as to what dealers will do. We used to actually recommend ATK as a source for engines when we needed one. We would give the customer the option of the umpteen thousand dollar new Toyota engine or the 3-4000 dollar ATK. 100% of the time they went ATK. Hey think about it labor dollars are labor dollars and they are pretty easy to deal with, at least they were when I was doing that kind of stuff.

PLEASE DO NOT GET RID OF THE OLD TN AS WE KNOW IT.
for the cost i'd say get a used engine... there are plenty of 1mz's around, and because you have a 96, you have OBD2 so you can use 96-01 1mz's. if you get a 97-01 1mz, you will have to use your old fuel setup because the gen 4 1mz is a returnless style, and the gen 3 is a return setup.
you may have to use the newer engine wiring harness, or maybe not... im not sure how different the gen 3 1mz harness is than the gen 4. you may even have to use the newer computer. but really, i doubt it.
its fairly easy to find a lower mileage 1mz for a low price. i found one for 750 with around 80K miles on it and its been running great for me. in my opinion used engines are the way to go.
^ the 94-95 1mz are also obdII, though sometimes the pins are weird...?
and from talking to my mechanic in the past, to swap in the gen4 1mz into the gen3, it's a direct drop beyond the fuel setup (from what you said), and the intake setup....beyond that, the ecu, etc is no problems and the harness should work.

Some good ideas out there, Would have liked to get a rebuilt, maybe even rebuild mine but the $$ is way up there. This was like most things unexpected so money is always an issue. Getting something shipped to Canada would just way overdrive the cost.
I've been hearing allot of good feedback from people about buying a used imported Japanese engine. I've been quoted about $1500-1800 cnd, this would be a v6 out of a 2000/2001 with about 65-85K km (~40K mi). I think I'll just have them replace the timing belt and any other hard to reach component before its put in.
Does anyone know how to identify when the engine was built? Is there a manufacturing stamp or something like it on the engine block?
Are there any issues regarding compatability other then changing intake/exhaust?
^ not sure about how to find when an engine was made, but you can also see the differences between the different generations of 1mzs by noticing hte little differences
the only thing you'll have to look out for (obviously) is to not grab a 1mz from an es300 or an avalon by accident or else you'll also need the ecu since they have vvti after the 3rd gen
