3rd Generation What Oil do You Use?

I was curious what types of Oil are people using in they're Camry, How Many miles they currently have, and how long they've been using that oil for. Right now I'm using Valvoline Durablend (Synthetic Blend) 10w30 and it started to leak a little oil from the rear main seal after I started putting it in. I beleive the previous owner use to take it to the shop to have the oil changed and they probably use plain ol regular oil.

Ok, I found the link for the Oil Bible page. It says you should flush your engine before sticking Synthetic Oil in a car that has been using regular oil. I would imagine it also applies for Half Synthetics. Question is, should I be flushing that engine with 205,000 miles on it? Also, does anyone know where I can get a Magnetic Oil plug for a reasonable price. The guys on ebay want $10 plus $10 to ship, that's a rip!

Castrol GTX with a fram oil filter

My family has a bulk amount of that stuff, but when that runs out what do you guys suggest for a '94 v6 le with 135k+ miles, sorta aggressive driver, in NY traffic.

Mobil High Mileage Synthetic-Blend 10W30. The percentage is low, but it swells the seals a bit for older motors preventing leaks and such. It's good stuff. Run it in any older car I've got.

Shell Rotella T or Mobil Diesel oil

Although I have used a little Mobil 1 synthetic oil, I prefer the diesel oils. Siesel engines are much tougher on oil than gas engines and have never disappointed me.

Here is my experience with Rotella T changing oil and filter every 5,000 miles:

1987 Camry 4 cyl 257,000 miles

1993 Camry 4 cyl 174,000 miles

1993 Previa 4 cyl 186,000 miles

1991 Chevy truck 350 V8 143,000 miles

I have removed the valve covers off the three Toyotas to check the valve clearance and all three engines were as clean as new. None burn any oil. I am now rebuilding the engine in the 1993 Camry because it had a cracked head gasket. I just figured I would rebuild it while I had the engine out of the car. The main and rod bearings looked like new. Needless to say, I am not switching oil.

Synthetic oil is fine but not needed for most applications. There is much hype about it that just doesn't apply to real life. It is about like going squirrel hunting with a 44 magnum. My .22 caliber rifle works just fine.

Changing oil every 3,000 miles is very good for the oil companies but your engine does not know the difference between 3,000 and 6,000 miles. If it makes you feel better to change oil every 3,000 miles, or 1,000 miles, or every week, fine. Placebos work like that. Counseling may be cheaper than all that oil though.

Sure, a new engine may not need a change every 3000 on the dot, but to say it wont make a diff between that and 6000, well u just shouldnt speak if u think that. I dont give in the that Hype mobile made about the "change every 15000" miles...i think its BS but do what u want.

Just imagine, every time u dont change ur oil over 3000 miles, it starts to become very dirty by then, dirt gets trapped in ur connecting rod and main bearings, and countless other key areas slowly wearing them down over time. Sure it may not be afffected much at first, but the person who changes ther oil every 3000, instead of 6000, will have a much longer engine life because they rid of the dirt/contanimants whenever possible rather than leave it in.

Ur choice i guess tho, reg. oil isnt THAT expensive nor the filter. Id prefer to keep my car as long as possible, and if chnging my oil every 3000 has made it last this long w/o any problems ever, then i will continue that. I will guarantee ur engine may not kno the difference between 3000 and 6000, but after some hard usage, count on finding out the difference urself after paying for the damages that will be caused in the future of ur engines life

not worth the risk in my book
