Unhappy One too many noises

What are the symptoms of major problems with suspension, axle, boots etc? My car made these metal on metal grinding noises when I would turn until I got the brakes and the shock absorbers taken care of a year ago. Some time ago my dad had my front tire replaced becaused somebody tried to slash it. Left the job half done. Anyway about a month or so later my car started to make other sounds. Kind of like when you get a hard piece of plastic and crush it with you foot. It would only make these sounds during low speed driving. Now the sound has gotten louder and it feels like something is broken there. When I go up driveways it feels as if something moves there. I could almost swear feeling the same in the back, mostly on the passenger side but I could be mistaken.

I'm taking it in as soon as I get it back but have you guys had this problem before? As I said before my brakes and shocks are relatively new. Mechanic said the suspension was still in great shape. It's a '97 with 135,XXX miles on it. I never hit or bumped my car into anything. Any ideas?

When your mechanic changed the strut (Camry doesn't have shocks) did he change the strut mount? new strut bearing? new swaybar end links? These Gen4 Camry's have alot of sources of suspension/steering noise as they age.

Does the sound only appear at slow speeds? Or can you make the sound happen when your lean agains the hood and bounce the front suspension up and down?
